Introduction


We are dedicated to working with Wisconsinites while preserving and enhancing the natural resources of Wisconsin. In partnership with individuals and organizations, DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.

The Wisconsin DNR is hiring three LTE (Limited Term Employee) – Fisheries Technicians. One position will be a 6 month appointment and will be located at the Wild Rose Habitat Station and two positions are 3 month appointments that will be stationed at our Shawano office.

Housing is available for employees working at the Shawano location.


Position Summary


These positions will conduct stream habitat improvement projects in Northeast Wisconsin.

Duties include: This position will operate chain saws, pumps, generators and a variety of hand tools; construction of common trout habitat improvement structures and perform streamside fishability/acessibility brushing as well as operating Department vehicles and other equipment necessary to meet project needs and other duties as assigned. This position will also assist area Fisheries personnel and Trout Unlimited groups as directed The selected candidate must be able to drive a state vehicle. Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUI violation within the past year are barred from driving state vehicles.

80% - Complete stream habitat improvement projects throughout Wisconsin's Northeast Region. Operate chain saws, pumps, generators and a variety of hand tools. Maintain, construct and install stream habitat improvement structures and conduct finish work such as hand seeding, mulching and grading streambanks. Remove woody vegetation to improve stream access and fishability.

10% - Assist area Fisheries personnel with survey work as needed. Operate Department vehicles and other equipment necessary to meet project needs.

10% - General Fisheries shop maintenance and office duties in support of the Fisheries Operation program including completing truck books, timesheets, purchasing requests and expense vouchers, and other duties as assigned.


Salary Information


These positions pay $16.00 per hour and are in pay schedule and range 06-12. For current and eligible former State employees, compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details


This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.

LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.

In order to be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

Qualifications


Required:
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools
  • Knowledge and understanding of Fisheries biology/ecology and habitat
  • Ability to work independently, unsupervised or in a team setting
  • Ability to work outdoors in flowing streams, a variety of weather conditions and on uneven/unstable terrain
- Possess a valid Drivers License and maintain eligibility to operate a state vehicle - Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUI violation within the past year are barred from driving state vehicles.
Preferred:
  • Ability to identify stream corridor plants, shrubs and trees
  • Possess FISTA or equivalent chainsaw certification
  • Experience with fisheries habitat improvement techniques
  • Associates or Bachelor degree or course work in a Natural Resource related field
