What You’ll Get to Do:


The Office of Foreign Litigation, Office of International Judicial Assistance (OIJA) in Washington, DC would like to engage a contractor to provide support in processing international judicial assistance requests, specifically the processing of service and evidence requests received from foreign courts in civil or commercial matters.

The candidate would be responsible for processing, analyzing, and monitoring evidence requests, using in OIJA’s electronic database. The candidate must review and analyze new evidence requests and draft appropriate responses in the form of referral letters, rejection letters, affidavits, and other correspondence to U.S. Attorney’s Offices, witnesses, and foreign courts. The candidate would also be responsible for drafting court pleadings pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1782 and preparing the documents for filing in district court. The candidate will review and assist in processing requests seeking service on the U.S. Government pursuant to the Hague Service Convention.

Other tasks for the candidate include contacting witnesses regarding new evidence requests, following up with U.S. Attorney’s Offices in relation to pending evidence requests, and responding to inquiries from the public relating to evidence and service matters received by phone and email. The candidate would also assist attorneys with legal research relating to novel or complex evidence or service matters. Tasks may also include Westlaw or Lexis research, case summaries, and short research projects related to international judicial assistance matters.

The candidate will also be responsible for printing, filing, scanning, and copying documents or sending out packages by FedEx. When other OIJA team members are absent or require assistance, the candidate will assist with other tasks as necessary.

Familiarity with the Microsoft suite, including Excel and Word, as well as Adobe Acrobat is essential. Knowledge of Bluebook citations is preferred. Strong analytic, organizational, and writing skills are required.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


More About the Role:

In addition to performing functions of Document Management Technician, as described below, performs moderately complex litigation support tasks, including, for example, detailed review and analysis of case materials in a broad range of subject matters, such as financial records, health care materials, and other litigation files; detailed indexing of case files; drafting procedures for accomplishing litigation support assignments; document acquisition related tasks; screening for privilege documents; and conducting database searches. Proofreads and edits deliverable products. Sometimes serves as "team leader" for larger group of Document Management Technicians and clerical support staff. Often works with minimal supervision. Reports to Task Supervisor or Project Supervisor.





You’ll Bring These Qualifications:


Knowledge of the application of various laws, court and/or administrative decisions, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures that pertain to legal cases and actions that include civil and/or criminal procedures.

Knowledge of research techniques, methodologies, and procedures sufficient to collect and prepare support documentation for the litigation of civil, criminal, and/or appellate cases.

Knowledge of automated litigation support systems, e-discovery, scanning and electronic document numbering.

Skill in computer software applications to create, edit, and format documents, correspondence, logs, spreadsheets, tables, or other records.

Skill in communicating verbally to prepare and present relevant information required to support proposed litigation.

Skill in communicating in writing to prepare legal documents including court filings, discovery, and internal memoranda; briefs; and summaries of analyses.

  • Undergraduate degree or three years of experience on major litigation support projects
  • Highly organized and demonstrated ability to work independently in a team environment
  • Must have excellent writing skills and oral communication capabilities.
  • Requires hands-on familiarity with the Government's office and network environment.
  • A knowledgeable user of the Government's office and network environment, including but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheet, imaging, and hardware systems.
  • Deliver consistent high-quality work product in a deadline driven environment under extreme pressure.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite of applications and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources
  • Familiarity with the Criminal Justice system.
  • Persistent, diligent attitude towards work assignments.
  • DOJ MBI must be obtainable (US Citizenship required).

  • Ability to speak a foreign language.
