Job description

Clemson Libraries seeks a collaborative and inclusive library degree holder who is looking for their first professional academic librarian position to participate in a three-year residency program. Clemson University is a member of the ACRL Diversity Alliance, and the purpose of the Library Residents Program is to increase the number of talented and qualified professional librarians from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. The residency is a full-time, 12-month non-tenure track temporary lecturer position. Job duties will be at a professional level appropriate to a faculty librarian position.

The residency is designed to match your professional interests and goals with the service and strategic priorities of the Libraries outlined in our upcoming revised Strategic Plan, which is also aligned with the university-wide Strategic Plan. You will have the opportunity to tailor the residency and develop goals according to your professional interests. The residency features orientation to multiple areas of academic librarianship at a research university and completion of at least two major projects, resulting in a diverse portfolio of activities.

Clemson Libraries has just undergone a major reorganization into three new Divisions. The residency program resides in Organizational Performance and Inclusion, but the program is structured to allow the resident to develop a specialization in any of the divisions. Work in the area of specialization will be supplemented with project-based opportunities in other areas of librarianship within or outside the home division throughout the residency. Residents will be guided in creating scholarly research output based on their projects and residency experience in years two and three, and will also receive support on marketing themselves and job seeking. You will also benefit from strong mentorship, committee service, and generous support for professional development and attendance at meetings and conferences.

Learning opportunities of the Library Resident could include:

Librarianship:

  • Reference and subject liaison work, teaching and learning, and outreach
  • Library technology, digital scholarship and scholarly communications
  • Cataloging, electronic resources management, metadata and resource discovery
  • Archival processing and finding aid creation

Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities:

  • Actively sharing knowledge and experiences with others in the field. This could include, but is not limited to, formal or informal conference presentations, writings and reflections or publications.

Service:

  • Participating in professional opportunities that serve the Libraries, University, profession, and/or community to develop leadership skills

Salary and Benefits:

Faculty rank and minimum salary of $58,410 based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience. Various medical plans, dental plans, and retirement plans are available. 18 days annual leave, 15 days sick leave, 13 paid holidays, and liberal professional development leave are provided. Library faculty receive an individual stipend for travel or other professional development activity, and the Library Resident will receive additional financial support to attend ACRL Diversity Alliance conferences and events.

Location:

Clemson University is a major, land-grant, science and engineering-oriented Carnegie Research One university in a college town setting along a dynamic Southeastern corridor. Clemson is an inclusive, student-centered community characterized by high academic standards, a culture of collaboration, school spirit, and a competitive drive to excel. Centrally located in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Clemson is in one of the fastest-growing areas of South Carolina, and a two-hour drive from Charlotte and Atlanta.

Required Qualifications:

  • Recent MLIS (within the last five years) from an ALA-accredited program (proof of degree completion needed by date of appointment). Consideration will also be given to those seeking to transition from a non-academic or non-faculty library position to academic librarianship with an earlier degree completion date.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills demonstrated by the ability to interact with respect and empathy, foster positive relationships and communicate concepts clearly
  • Strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace

Applicants should electronically submit all applications and related materials via Interfolio: http://apply.interfolio.com/122456 Required materials include a cover letter, professional curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information of three (3) professional references. The cover letter must address the following questions: What has shaped your interest in academic librarianship? What would you like to get out of the residency program, addressing how you want to see yourself in years one, two and three? Review of materials will begin immediately. Applications received by April 14 will be guaranteed consideration.

Interested applicants are invited to attend an informational webinar to learn more about the position and Clemson University on Friday, April 7 from 9:00am-10:00am EDT:
