The Law Department consists of over 200 positions in three divisions: The City Attorney' s Office, the City Prosecutor's Office, and Management Services. Currently, there are vacancies for Legal Clerk II within the City Prosecutor's Office (Criminal Division).

The City Prosecutor's Office (Criminal Division) is responsible for prosecuting misdemeanor offenses (e.g., DUI, assault, indecent exposure, threats, criminal damage, shoplifting, and trespass), handling approximately 45,000 cases per year. The Prosecutor's Office also provides information and resources for crime victims and witnesses, those encountering barking dog or neighborhood issues, and information on our diversion programs, specialty courts, and the hours of operation are Monday - Friday 6:00AM to 5:00PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 6:00AM - 3:00PM.

The Legal Clerk II is responsible for obtaining all necessary material related to various cases reviewed and charged in the City of Phoenix Prosecutor's office jurisdiction. Additional responsibilities may include performing both critical and/or legally mandated functions related to victim's rights such as sending victim notification letters, ensuring victims have court escorts, and ensuring that emergency services are available and provided to victims.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing customer service in person or by phone.
  • Explaining court processes to members of the public.
  • Scanning and creating case files.
  • Generating and processing dockets/documents/discovery/subpoenas.
  • Reading and interpreting court documents/defendant notices/computer printouts or case files.
  • Accessing, reading, and interpreting case-related information from data and/or image computer systems.
  • Entering and updating computer records from source documents and customer transactions.
  • Working with outside agencies.

The Law Department will consider candidates at both the Legal Clerk I & Legal Clerk II level. Candidates at both levels should apply to this recruitment.

  • Able to interact professionally with members of the public, judges, attorneys, and other staff in the legal system.
  • Able to perform clerical tasks that involve legal terminology and processes.
  • Spanish language skills are highly preferred.

SALARY


Legal Clerk I
$15.82 (minimum) - $19.93 (maximum) hourly / $32,905.60 - $41,454.40 annually. Candidiates may be hired up to $41,454.40 depending upon qualifications.

Legal Clerk II
$17.41 (minimum) - $21.94 (maximum) hourly / $36,212.80 - $45,635.20 annually. Candidates may be hired up to $45,635.20 depending upon qualifications.

Additionally, effective 10/1/2022, Paid Parental Leave is now offered to eligible employees up to 480 hours (12 weeks) of paid leave for the birth, adoption or foster care placement of a child during a 12-month period.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Legal Clerk I

  • One year of clerical or public contact experience.

  • Two years of clerical or public contact experience.
  • Including a minimum of one year in a courtroom or law office.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Customer service experience.
  • Experience accessing and using a database for data entry and/or documentation.
  • Working weekends and holidays may be required.
  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
