This position is a member of the High Performance Polymers BU Process Technology organization and will be located in King of Prussia, PA and reports to the Global VDF and Kynar Process Technology Manager. There will be a matrix reporting line to the Corporate Technology team, administratively reporting to the Director of Process Engineering and Process Technology. This position works closely with the manufacturing sites, R&D, pilot plant, business and supply chain. This position does not have any direct reports.


Key Activities & Responsibilities:

Pilot plant and plant short term process support: 40%

  • Identify process safety improvement opportunities and develop improvements where appropriate. Process lead for PHAs, MOCs, and other safety reviews as needed. Advance process safety initiatives in the plants. Incorporate safety principles and waste minimization and control into work assignments. Lead root cause analyses (RCA) using appropriate methodologies.
  • Using knowledge of process chemistry and operations, develop and lead cost savings initiatives at the plants.
  • Utilize rigorous statistical methodology, including DOE, SQC, regression, and other forms of optimization.
  • Process lead with active participation in R&D projects, including coordination with plant for new product trials.
  • Provide plant support as necessary (Calvert city, KY mostly, eventually China and France) and participate in development of operating procedures and process documents. Support or direct test runs and/or new product trials in the plants.
  • Support for Kynar® pilot unit (on-site at King of Prussia) including oversight for design & execution of pilot programs.


Mid term process technology studies - CAPEX project leader: 60%

  • Study process alternatives and develop preliminary economics analysis to advance technology.
  • Perform basic engineering work dealing with the development of process technology for capital projects, improving plant performance, and/or testing of new equipment concepts. Expected to show originality and innovation in developing problem solutions.
  • Support the development of solutions for a variety of technical challenges assuming the role of team leader in projects as needed. Develop solutions and implement designs for process improvements using the plant MOC and/or project procedures.


Context & Environment

  • This position is located at KoP. Conditions encountered are typical of an office environment with travel to the plant and contractor locations to obtain data, assist in design, and assist in start-up.
  • May require occasional international travel. Travel may average 20%-30% based on project portfolio and stage of the projects to the plants
  • Works with little supervision; receives broad direction and determines task list for work completion, and prepares timing. Expected to show originality and innovation in developing problem solutions. Solutions and projects are expected to work reliably. Works closely with consultants, E&C companies, corporate groups, plant technology teams, etc. Work will be mainly focused in US, but will include participation in global teams and some international travel.
  • Supports Engineering and Technology initiatives, such as digital program, CSR, process book initiative, Team of Teams, etc.
  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents
  • Sets own career directions and customizes own development plan.


Required Education/Qualification/Work Experience

  • An undergraduate degree in chemical engineering is required for this position. BS ChE with 5+ years of hands-on experience.
  • Higher degree candidates as well as higher experience level candidates will be able to provide higher value in this role, Masters and PHD may count as additional experience.
  • Well versed and experienced in the application of principles and theories of Chemical Engineering.
  • Preferred candidates will have training and industrial experience in the area of polymerization and/or polymer processing.
  • Additional certifications, such as lean six sigma would be advantageous.

  • Full understanding of Kynar technology, unit operations, and control technology at multiple sites. Expert in internal methods and tools.
  • Recognized technology or engineering leader. Provides cross business unit/departmental support.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing solutions to close compliance items. Conducts cause analysis.
  • PHA leader or facilitator. SME for safety critical safeguard calculations. Good understanding of PSM and RMP overall program.
  • Leads efforts to develop and analyse options in a capital project by assessing all considerations (technical, financial, safety, environmental). Well-versed in stage gate and coaches less experienced engineers to use the methodology.
  • Actively networks and consults within and outside business unit or support function. Actively participates in corporate initiatives. Work processes leader. Messaging, presentations and written reporting to director level.
  • Has internal and external networks. (e.g. AICHE, CCPS, etc.). Mentors less experienced engineers outside of BU.
  • Contributes to process specific intellectual property.
  • Proficient in completion of CSR (ESG) deliverables for projects and plant support programs. Leads assigned climate change roadmap.
  • Proficient in multiple manufacturing digital tools. Mentors others. Keeps current with digital developments.
  • "Application of multiple manufacturing digital tools, simulation, control and databases at plant level with tangible results.
  • Leads a digital portfolio."
  • Is recognized within the site/department as a skilled applier of engineering and technology.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform work on a number of projects simultaneously. Responsible for short-term prioritization of work, time tracking, and regular communication of results.
