Scenic Lead Carpenter

Orange County-based live events production company is currently seeking an experienced Scenic Lead Carpenter with deep knowledge of entertainment/theatrical scenic build techniques, and experience leading scenic crews and fabrication teams in on-site installations in the entertainment or live events space.

The Scenic Lead Carpenter works as part of the Scenic Design and Fabrication team to create custom events for our clients. Qualified candidates must apply critical thinking skills to complex projects, be able to work in a fast-paced environment, and have an ability to think outside the box or approach problems from a unique perspective.

The Scenic Lead Carpenter reports directly to a Fabrication Manager and works under the supervision of the Shop Foreman to oversee all aspects of building scenery for events and preparing pieces for shipping and on-site installation.

Requirements Include:

  • Possess at least 4+ years of previous experience with scenic carpentry (theatrical, theme park, film production, or live events).
  • Have 2+ years of specialization in at least one of the following areas: carpentry (including experience with advanced build methodologies, materials, and structures); welding; CNC; or scenic art.
  • Have at least 2 years of experience leading a scenic/fabrication build.
  • Working experience with various materials and fabrication techniques (wood, metal, welding, hardware, plastics, laminates, fabrics, etc.).
  • Ability to read, understand, and make recommendations for changes or improvements to build drawings.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and client expectations.
  • Be solutions-oriented in dealing with all builds, demonstrate creative problem-solving abilities, and apply critical thinking skills to ensure all projects are executed with consideration to structural stability, safety, and meet, or exceed client expectations.
  • Experience with foam work, epoxies or resins is desirable but not required.
  • Ability to travel throughout the Southern California area to lead scenic installations.
  • Willingness to work late nights, overtime, and weekends to help complete projects on time.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and have a valid driver’s license.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the success of all scenic portions of a project from build to on-site installation through strike.
  • Oversee all aspects of building scenic components under the supervision of the Shop Foreman. This includes: construction, paint, finish work, and preparing scenic elements for shipment.
  • Review and recommend improvements to the scenic fabrication process, including: maintenance schedules, tools management, and new tool or material recommendations.
  • Ensure construction builds and quality checks are done in a timely and accurate manner at each stage of the build process.
  • Prepare crew with onsite details which may include: parking, location, and arranging rides, if needed.
  • Inform the Shop Foreman of any additional needs for on-site work, which may include: special tools, extra materials wanted, paint kits, etc.
  • Stay up-to-date with other departmental aspects of scenic builds (lighting, graphics, AV, etc.) and be cognizant of the order of operations needed for integration.
  • Follow the SBO (shop build order) Checklist and perform quality checks throughout the build process for each SBO in the shop as well as during on-site installation.
  • Ensure all scenic elements are built and finished to a quality standard that meets or exceeds the client's and MEI's expectations.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and management support for the Scenic department.
  • Ensure quality standards are effectively maintained within the Scenic department and throughout each project.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned by MEI.
