JOB DESCRIPTION: Building Engineer

The following are the Duties and Responsibilities of the School Building Engineer under the direction of and subject to the authority of the COO and Principal.

Reports To:

Under the direction and authority of the School Principal

Job Overview:

Performs routine repairs in buildings of Betty Shabazz International Charter Schools (i.e. electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry etc.) Responsible for the operation of all heating, ventilating, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, refrigeration and equipment. Maintains these and other mechanical equipment to insure compliance with City, State and Federal codes to prevent premature failure. Supervises, coordinates and is responsible for and participates in the safe operation of the entire school building plant and equipment. Supervises, coordinates and is responsible for the cleanliness of his/her assigned school building and grounds.

Staff Supervised:

Custodial Workers, Watchman, all trade personnel and contractors working in the building. This is subject to the authority and direction of the COO.
Certificates:
City of Chicago Stationary Engineers License, State of Illinois, Continuing Education class certification to be promoted.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Safety:

  • Insures the school building where he/she is assigned is safe for occupancy of students and staff.
  • Rectifies any problems that may impede the occupancy of the school building.
  • In charge of the Fire Prevention Program at his/her school building.
  • Repairs, maintains, operates and test Fire Protection Equipment o Fire Sprinkler Systems - Fire Extinguisher

o Fire Alarm Systems

o Performs fire pump flow test

o Annual Sprinkler system test

- Heat Detectors

- Monthly pump and bell test

Security:

  • Responds to emergency situations such as fire, burglaries and vandalism over weekend, holidays and after regular hours.
  • Responsible for security during unoccupied hours.

Technical:

  • Operates and maintains high and low pressure boiler with pressures exceeding 80

psi.

  • Operates and maintains Direct Digital Controlled buildings, i.e. multi-zone, VAY unites, chillers up to 4000 tons, high temperature hydronic systems, electrically heated/air conditioned school buildings, roof top units, and unit ventilators.
  • Operates and maintains power tools and equipment.
  • Operates and maintains swimming pools where applicable, introduces chemical s to maintain water quality and assuring it meets Illinois Department of Public Health Standards and is safe for swimmers.
  • Ongoing certification for Refrigeration Transition and Recovery licensure.
  • Ongoing training and Indoor Air quality certification.
  • Ongoing training in Homeland Security - First Responder certification.
  • Ongoing training in Energy Management

Supervision:

  • Supervises and schedules custodial and maintenance personnel.
  • Evaluates and trains all custodial and maintenance personnel under his/her charge, training them in the safe and proper procedures in the performance of their duties.
  • Assists the Principal in the Progressive Discipline Procedure when discipline of the staff under his/her supervision is necessary.
  • Creates and revises work schedules assuring maximum work output with existing staffing at the building are achieved with final approval from Campus OPerations manager.
  • Monitors attendance and time of employees under his/her charge.

Administrative:

  • Submits, monitors, maintains and calculates payroll/attendance records for employees under his/her charge.
  • Submits monthly building reports as required.
  • Initiates purchase orders for supplies and equipment needed to perform his/her function in school building.
  • Initiates and prioritizes requisitions for repairs to the school building and grounds and/or equipment as per the building needs and Principal's request.
  • Meets weekly with Principal and COM to discuss building needs.
  • Meets at least monthly with COM and Foodservice to discuss needs in the Foodservice department.

Maintenance and Repair:

  • Services and maintains Foodservice equipment - plumbing, refrigeration, dishwashers, ovens, freezers. Makes minor repairs as needed.
  • Maintains and procures all power equipment, including snow, lawn and other gas powered equipment.
  • Performs minor building repairs.
  • Replaces lamp ballasts on an emergency basis.
  • Repairs and assembles school furniture.

Housekeeping - Supervise and Manage:

  • Responsible for the cleanliness of school building and grounds
  • Graffiti removal
  • Seasonal Maintenance - lawn care, weed removal etc.

Environmental:

  • Maintains an environment conductive to education
  • Initiates and prioritizes requisitions for repairs to school building and grounds as per the request of the Principal.
  • Maintains asbestos monitoring program
  • Performs three month asbestos monitoring reports
  • Monitors lead abatement
  • Maintains proper air quality to insure fresh air is admitted into the school building per codes and needs.

Rehabilitation Projects:

  • Coordinates construction/rehab projects at the school building under the authority of the COO.
  • Meets with project managers and records progress of the particular project.
  • Arranges construction work to be performed with the least disruption to the students.

Community Relations:

  • Cooperates with the Principal in the effective and efficient operation of the school building while maintaining a comfortable environment.
  • Consults with Principal to insure an environment conducive to learning.
  • Coordinates individual school operations and building hours with the Principal.
  • Meets with Foodservice personnel and addresses their needs. Per direction of CMO.

BSICS Agent:

  • Coordinates school activities with city agencies - Police, Fire Department, Chicago Park District and City Colleges in collaboration with BSICS safety & security and Principal.
  • Receiving agent for deliveries to the school
  • Manages energy conservation and fuel consumption.

Terms of Employment: Building Engineers are hourly employees expected to work 40 hours/week. Hourly rates vary.

Evaluation: The Principal will evaluate performance of this job annually.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $25.00 per hour
