Job Summary: In this entry-level position, the employee has the responsibility and authority to perform assigned tasks in hand lay-up of composite materials within a required time, utilizing lay-up mandrels, molds, and small tools.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensures kit (core, if necessary) and lay-up mandrel match by part number.
  • Unpacks kit and organizes it according to the Planning (documents).
  • Fills out material data sheets as required by directions in the Planning.
  • Performs tool preparation as required in the Planning, after Autoclave does the bulk of it.
  • Performs fabrication operations as necessary to ensure correct lay-up of parts.
  • Cleans up the work area as each ply is applied to prevent any foreign matter (FOD) from mixing in with the part.
  • Requests help from trainers and/or leads at any time during the process, so problems can be fixed while the part is in the lay-up stage.
  • Follows bagging procedures and performs a leak test to ensure leak test passes or meets specifications.
  • Finishes fabrication of part by keeping the part under vacuum until it is ready for the Autoclave process.
  • Completes all data on fabricated parts as required by the Planning.
  • Follows required work procedures as necessary for a given part, which may be in addition to the Planning Procedure.
  • May be required to handle hazardous chemicals.
  • Performs clean-up operations as required by the Lead or Supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills: Ability to fabricate all Level I parts (50% within the first 90 days in job position). Ability to meet or better the lay-up time required for each Level I part within quality standards. Must pass a “hands-on” test demonstrating the lay-up techniques required for each Level I part, within a reasonable time from the start date. Must pass a written test to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of quality standards for every Level I part, within a reasonable time from the start date.

  • Ability to maintain techniques, time requirements, and quality standards on a consistent ongoing basis.

Qualifications: US citizen or lawful permanent resident required; High school diploma or equivalent required; One year of continuous work history is highly desired; Ability to maintain consistent attendance and punctuality required;

  • Basic math skills required;
  • Blueprint reading is desirable;
  • Experience working in fast food or with arts and crafts is desirable.

Work Environment: Read and carry out instructions on operation sheets and inspection records; Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; Use hand tools and fine measuring tools; Vision (corrected or uncorrected) within requirements established for quality.

  • Constant standing without support and bending/leaning over; frequently walking; occasional climbing, stooping/crouching/kneeling, sitting without support.
  • Occasionally lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds;
  • Occasionally assist in lifting or moving tools or parts that weigh over 100 pounds;
  • A cleanroom environment that does not allow ANY food, drink, gum, chewing tobacco, mints, etc. at any time;
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as lab coats, gloves, and hairnets at all times. ALLHAIR MUST BE INSIDE OF HAIR NET; GLOVES MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHEN TOUCHING PRE-PREG MATERIAL; Required to occasionally wear a respiratory mask, as determined by materials handled;
