Job description

Lawyer, New Beginnings Counseling Center, Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Legal Services Pilot Project – Part Time, Hourly

We are looking to create a panel of five lawyers to serve as mediators for the program. The SSVF Program Coordinator will be the point person for the project and will provide any information available regarding the dispute. In order for participation in the project both parties must agree to the process in writing. Once eligibility has been confirmed the SSVF Coordinator will randomly assign a legal representative (mediator on the panel). If there is a conflict, the case will be randomly assigned to the next legal representative on the panel.

The goal of the pilot project is to provide legal mediation services when there is a problem with a veteran tenancy after regular avenues for dispute resolution have not resolved the issue. Ultimately the program goal is to preserve the veteran’s tenancy, avoid costly eviction proceedings, and prevent veteran homelessness.

The Lawyer/Legal representative role:

· Meet with each party to determine the reason for potential eviction

· Determine what has been done to avoid the eviction

· Determine the goals of each party in order for the veteran to maintain tenancy and to resolve the situation

· Negotiate with landlord a reasonable amount of time for SSVF staff to locate another unit for the veteran if there is no resolve to avoid homelessness and preserve landlord relationship

· Advise the SSVF Program Coordinator about what is needed to maintain veteran tenancy, e.g., payment of arrears, ongoing case management, etc.

Qualifications and Requirements for this Position:

· The ideal candidate will have experience working in landlord/tenant negotiations, in the nonprofit sector with veterans in mediation, and/or with the housing insecure.

· Must have current license to practice law in CA

· Lawyers on the panel will be paid on a “low bono” basis at $250.00 per hour.

· Hours are based on need.

· Pilot Project will commence once the mediator panel is in place.

Send a resume, cover letter and a list of three professional references to hr@sbnbcc.org.

If we feel you are a good match for the position, you will be contacted to schedule an interview.
