Responsibilities


POSITION SUMMARY:

Full-time position in mitochondrial physiology laboratory focused on stress signaling using optogenetic approaches. The technician will be actively participating in the research activities with minimal supervision. The technician will perform complex laboratory assignments, planning and conducting a complete project.

Basic laboratory skills required including molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry. C. elegans, tissue culture and imaging experience preferred. Strong molecular biology and biochemistry background is desired.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

25%: Provide management C. elegans strains, documentation and organization of data. Perform C. elegans behavioral assays, analyze data, transfer worms, pour agar plates and grow bacterial cultures.

20%: Develop and execute experiments both fairly independently and in collaboration with scientists in the group. Perform routine molecular biology and biochemistry analysis such as Western blotting, PCR, and cloning.

20%: Culture C. elegans/cells, isolate mitochondria and measure mitochondrial function/biogenetics.

15%: Review, analyze and integrate technical work of others. Preform literature searches and contribute to research projects and manuscripts.

10%: Maintain laboratory equipment; purchase supplies; preparation of reagents/media; budget management; maintenance of regulatory guidelines and laboratory safety

10%: Maintain and propagate mammalian cell line in tissue culture using aseptic technique.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Requirements

  • Education/Experience (minimum required): Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 4-5 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Candidate must be highly organized and detail/documentation oriented with strong interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication. The ability to follow instructions exactly, record information accurately and troubleshoot problems is required. Position includes long periods of observing C. elegans under the microscope and recording behavioral responses.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, experience in cell and molecular biology techniques and cell culture.
  • Competency in basic computer applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is essential.
  • Experience required in molecular biology techniques (PCR, Western, immunofluorescence), microscopy and tissue culture.

Preferred

  • Mammalian cell culture and fluorescent imaging experience is preferred
