Job Summary:


We are seeking a Laboratory Sciences Research Professional (Senior, or Intermediate Professional) to join our growing laboratory. Our research is primarily focused on molecular mechanisms underlying abnormal human placental vascular function in severe fetal growth restriction. The lab is seeking to recruit an individual with prior basic research laboratory experience. In general, this will include prior experience in execution of experiments, tabulation and analysis of results, meticulous record-keeping, and performance of daily operations. Furthermore, this individual will also be required to maintain meticulous record-keeping of experiments and laboratory operations, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects, support and train junior team members, and assist the lab manager and PI of the lab. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work both independently and in collaboration with colleagues are also required.

Examples of specific duties include isolation of primary endothelial cells and fibroblasts from the human placenta, cell culture-based experiments, 3-dimensional culture techniques, RNA isolation, protein isolation, qPCR, immunoblotting, flow cytometry, advanced cell imaging, and other advanced molecular biology techniques. Please note that this position requires flexible work hours, including some weekends and occasional overnight times, as required for completion of study aims.

Nature of work:

Regardless of rank, this laboratory science professional will be expected to perform duties in an experimental lab, including handling of human biological specimens. Examples of duties include:

  • Collaborating with and supporting the principal investigator and lab manager with laboratory and research functions
  • Utilizing a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Performing experiments, tabulating, and analyzing results
  • Performing pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical test processes to evaluate results produced and troubleshoot, as needed
  • Preparing lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas
  • Picking up, transporting, and maintaining results, samples, documents, materials, and other items needed.
  • Disposing of laboratory materials and samples using well-established guidelines and instructions
  • Reviewing, completing, and processing logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information
  • Providing support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve processes
  • Assisting in the review and implementation of lab support policies to meet organizational, operational, and management needs
  • Assisting with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations’
  • Assisting and training junior team members

Above duties AND:

  • Independently reviewing, developing, and implementing new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Independently and creatively identifying laboratory solutions as needed
  • Assisting team leads with creation and implementation of processes, procedures, and quality improvement

Nature of work for Laboratory Sciences Research Senior Professional Above duties AND:

  • Providing laboratory science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis, and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of investigators and researchers
  • Developing or assisting with developing protocol-specific systems and documents, including process flows, training manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Assisting with identifying issues related to operational efficiency
  • Serving as a resource to the principal investigator and lab manager

Qualifications:


Minimum Qualifications:

Intermediate Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis • One (1) year professional level research experience

Senior Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
  • Two (2) years professional level research experience
  • Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in biomedical research or similar Experience with reading scientific literature, reviewing scientific articles, and scientific presentations
  • Experience with isolation of primary cells
  • Experience with 3-dimensional cell culture models
  • Proficiency with standard molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry techniques such as RNA and protein isolation, qPCR, western blotting, flow cytometry, advanced imaging

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to master and interpret basic research protocols
  • Aptitude and willingness to learn new skills/knowledge with goal of achieving independence in designing, performing, and analyzing experiments
  • Careful and methodical work practices with excellent record-keeping
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory safety
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Powerpoint, and Excel
  • Flexible work schedule, including some weekends and occasional overnights as required for completion of study aims. In addition to a rotating, on-call schedule to process patient samples that become available during off-hours, typical working hours are Monday through Friday (~9 AM – 5 PM).

Intermediate Level: $43,834 – $55,757

Senior Level: $47,388 – $60,278

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
