ECU Health Duplin Hospital is an 81-bed facility located in Kenansville, North Carolina. The 15-bed emergency department serves approximately 25,000 patients per year. In addition to providing general medical and surgical services, ECU Health Duplin Hospital offers chemotherapy and other cancer infusion interventions and has earned national designation as a Primary Stroke Center.

Position Summary

Responsible for training new Laboratory staff, allied Health students, and staff from Patient Care services in all areas of phlebotomy and Lab customer service. Directly demonstrates, instructs and explains procedures and observes/verifies work to insure accuracy. Documents training/skill level of trainee. Assists in securing staff to cover staffing shortages. Demonstrates a high level of skill as well as sound judgement. Serves as a resource and efficiently performs all duties of a Lab Support Tech I as listed on position description. Provides documentation for Quality Improvement activities. Efficient performance of these duties requires a person with accuracy of work, critical thinking skills, mental alertness, and physical endurance. The job requires a neat appearing, pleasant, tactful individual with a sincere interest in others. Must be able to cooperate with others and follow ECU Medical Center and Pathology personnel policies. Must be able to follow directions and work well under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Train/orients new staff, Care Partners, Nurses, and Allied Health students. Completes documentation of training progress and skill level appropriately for file. Explains procedures and checks work to insure accuracy. Instructs trainee on use of safe needle devices and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment. Instructs individuals on proper disposal of biohazard and non-biohazard trash. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of policies and procedures.
  • Serves in the absence of the supervisor/assistant manager/manager of Clinical Support. Able to resolve questions/problems and provide assistant manager/manager with information for follow up. Assists with securing staff to cover staffing issues. Can assess schedule and make recommendations on the number of staff necessary to insure safe/efficient processing of work. Assure that personnel problems such as meal/break periods are documented and reported for proper follow up. Serves on departmental committees. Provides documentation for Quality Improvement monitors. Orders and maintains supplies. Assists with the annual review of policies and procedures.
  • Performs duties of a Lab Support Tech I per job description. Demonstrates a high level of skill as well as judgement for all duties. Serves as a resource for questions, assistance, and problem solving.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Flexible with scheduling needs to assure resources are used efficiently. Completes daily work bench assignments. Assists with annual skills day activities for Patient Care Services.
  • Demonstrates phlebotomy knowledge and skills necessary to provide service appropriate to the age of the patient for the following developmental stages: Infant, Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Elderly.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School or equivalent (or higher)
  • 3 years experience in a hospital or reference laboratory setting, physician office outpatient clinic or other medical setting is required
  • Phlebotomy certification by ASCP or other nationally recognized certifying agency is required
