This position serves as the laboratory manager for five community hematology and medical oncology clinics and infusion units throughout the Portland-metro area, collectively referred to as Community Hematology Oncology (CHO). This position additionally manages clinical lab operations at the Center for Health and Healing - 2 (CHH-2) 3rd Floor Lab to support the mission and objectives of OHSU Healthcare.
CHO is a part of the OHSU Knight-Legacy Health Cancer Collaborative (Cancer Collaborative), which is a partnership that exists to enhance care delivery and access for patients across OHSU, Legacy Health, and the community at large. The Cancer Collaborative aims to align clinical protocols, access and service standards, practice standards, and clinical outcome and patient experience expectations across participating sites and institutions.
The CHO-CHH2 Lab Manager will have the opportunity to work with a team of dedicated laboratory staff across organizations and sites. The CHO-CHH2 Lab Manager will oversee daily lab operations, and perform bench work as needed to maintain proficiency/competency in technical operations. The manager will have the opportunity to apply innovative and strategic leadership to ensure excellence in lab operations, from cost and quality, to regulatory and patient experience measures.
The incumbent works cooperatively with the Administrative Lab Director, CHO Clinic Director and appropriate medical directors to manage the physical and human resource assets of the department in accordance with departmental, clinic, hospital, and corporate policies.
The CHO-CHH-2 Lab Manager is responsible to maintain all laboratory operations at high standards consistent with all quality policies and to meet all accreditation requirements. The CHO-CHH-2 Lab Manager will advise OHSU Pathology and CHO leadership on laboratory issues, lead current and new laboratory initiatives relating to practice optimization, and represent leadership in external programs, projects and committees. The CHO-CHH-2 Lab Manager will direct and oversee lab operations at Beaverton, Tualatin/Meridian Park, Northwest/Good Samaritan, East Portland/Adventist, Gresham/Mt. Hood, and CHH-2.
Function/Duties of Position:
As manager of the section, acts as a leader and technical role model for all lab processes, provides training when needed, and maintains current, detailed knowledge of section operations. Performs and coordinates higher level functions of laboratory including QC and proficiency testing review and corrective action, new test development, advanced staff training, review of staff work, coordination of work assignments, and other as assigned.
Ensures that safety regulations are met. Informs leadership when safety regulations are not met or new safety issues arise. Is pro-active in problem solving and planning for the future needs of the laboratory. Participates in regular bench rotations and provides training where indicated. Creates an environment of continuous improvement for staff.
HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
Manages human resources according to labor laws and collective bargaining contracts with no repetitive violations of contract articles or labor laws or untimely response to filed grievances. Provides training and development for staff and other hospital employees as appropriate. Works with staff to recognize team and individual accomplishments, ensure open communication, teamwork, and high-level customer service.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Medical Technology, chemical, physical, biological science, business management or related field.
- 4 years of supervisory, lead, or project management experience in laboratory services, or equivalent.
- 4 years of work experience as MT/MLS/MLT or equivalent clinical lab experience
- General knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials and techniques, regulations and safety.
- Skill in handling of laboratory specimens, record keeping and laboratory equipment.
- Skill in identifying cells and cell morphology.
- Skill in using several different computer systems, including: word processing, dedicated LIS/HIS, etc.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately, and operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment.
- Ability to work independently within established guidelines, and apply problem-solving skills.
- Ability to demonstrate performance of job duties to trainees.
- Demonstrate personal integrity, efficiency, and ability to adjust to rapidly changing testing priorities.
- Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment and display technical skills at many different workstations throughout the laboratory.
- MLS (ASCP) or MLT (ASCP) or equivalent.

- This position functions in a laboratory and office environment with possible exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The environment is busy with many possible interruptions, multiple demands and constant interactions with people.
- This position may require working flexible schedules including, weekends and holidays; working at multiple laboratory or hospital sites; travel between laboratories and sites by stairs, elevator, tram, shuttle or other means; exposure to blood and body fluids, chemical hazards; working in a somewhat noisy and crowded environment; wearing gloves and other Personal Protective Equipment for long periods of time; experiencing occasional variations in temperature

This position requires heavy use of computer and phones and occasional use of laboratory equipment. May require sitting for long periods and lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs.
