Position Summary

This position is responsible for managing the direction and coordination of the client payroll tax service activities and management among the payroll tax staff. The Payroll Tax Manager will provide directional and technical guidance to all levels of experienced staff in addition to processing their own portfolio of Payroll Tax clients. This person will also contact clients to resolve all tax related matters and implements tax preparation for the clients and payroll liabilities as well and manage the Payroll Tax department.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manager to Payroll Tax Specialists and Payroll Tax Department
  • Manage employees assigned to payroll accounts and flow of processing payroll tax calendars
  • Servicing clients for processing ACH taxes, and filing quarterly reports
  • Responsible for project management for client onboarding across multiple products and services
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory tax law developments, communicate the effects of these developments to management and the tax team and create strategies to capitalize on changes to taxation legislation
  • Maintaining a high rate of client retention through quality service by demonstrating attentiveness to customer’s needs
  • Provides quick responses to client inquiries with qualitative solutions
  • Reviews tax and payroll work of subordinates
  • Ensuring compliance with important laws and internal policies
  • Leverage tax statutes and IRS regulations to research Payroll Tax operational/industry best practices with regards to multi-state taxation
  • Understand and ensure accurate taxable gross definition setups for new and existing Payroll Taxes
  • Processing weekly transfer of payroll data to payroll system
  • Trains, mentors and provides work direction to staff
  • Provide support with various internal audits and special tax related projects
  • Review tax returns and quarterly/yearly tax projections
  • Recognizes, anticipates, and resolves tax issues, and makes recommendations
  • Promotes firm services to existing and prospective clients.
  • Meets productivity and efficiently standards
  • Research the implications of tax laws and advise clients on tax related issues
  • Reconcile tax data on financial statements
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Bachelor's Degree or Comparable work experience in a Manager level payroll or tax position
  • 3+ years of payroll tax experience with at least 1 year of mid-level compliance work required
  • 3+ years of experience in a management role required
  • MasterTax experience required
  • CA state tax experience required
  • Knowledge of state agencies required
  • Internal Revenue Service (IRS) experience required
  • Kronos or UKG experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel, Word and Access
  • High level technical expertise in the full range of tax or payroll software
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to manage and develop staff
  • Demonstrated mentoring, coaching and organizational administrative skills required
  • Ability to identify outside consulting need and present financial and business case metrics
  • Well-developed presentation skills
  • Excellent customer relationship skills
  • Strong organization, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with all personnel within the organization and facilitate communication effectively
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines
