PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Design, map, repair, and install electronic irrigation systems on Colonial Williamsburg properties. Serves as departmental contact for repairs and redesign of existing manual water systems to include water pipes and hose bibs. Organize, complete inventory, and maintain records of irrigation equipment. Act as the department’s small engine mechanic to create and maintain the inventory of small engine equipment. Assist Arborist and IPM Technician.

WORK TO BE PERFORMED:

2. Troubleshoot mechanical problems and orders parts.

3. Maintain two-way communication with the landscape contractor and other departments regarding repairs, work schedules, or any other activities that may impact an irrigation system.

4. Complete backflow inspections and share information with Mechanical Maintenance on completion of tasks.

5. Install new drip and sprinkler systems.

6. Set and maintain timers on computer and electronic valve clocks; troubleshoots computerized electronic systems, irrigation controllers, solenoid valves, and heads of all types.

7. Map systems for Foundation master plans.

8. Instruct staff on minor irrigation repairs as well as the safe operation of small engine equipment.

9. Assist in the purchasing and distribution of irrigation parts and power equipment.

10. Perform routine maintenance and makes repairs on small engine equipment.

11. Prepare equipment for seasonal transitions to include snow removal, turf renovation, and the mowing season.

12. Provide assistance with turf renovation and pest application initiatives.

13. Inspect and adjust components as necessary to keep low voltage landscape lighting positioned for optimum illumination.

14. Adhere to all safety practices and policies according to OSHA and EPA standards.

15. Assists arborist and operate large equipment for arboretum activities including planting and removal of trees.

SUPERVISION TO BE EXERCISED:

Indirectly: Various landscape staff as assigned to irrigation or small engine tasks.

DIRECTION RECEIVED:

General supervision from Landscape Manager

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum: Knowledge of plumbing, basic electricity and hydraulics related to an irrigation system; knowledge of automatic valves and controllers, and various types of pumps and pumping systems; good oral and written communications skills; ability to collaborate with others; excellent organizational skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. A high school diploma/G.E.D. is required as are three years’ experience of underground lawn sprinkler system installation and repair are required OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Position requires advanced knowledge of small engine troubleshooting and repair, and the ability to operate small equipment (i.e.: chainsaw) and heavy equipment (i.e.: loader and skid-steer). Ability to: 1) walk, bend, stoop and kneel 2) lift weight up to 50 pounds, 3) work outside in all weather conditions, 4) work flexible schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays, and 5) be available for work on an emergency basis seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Requires valid Virginia driver's license and a Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services commercial certified pesticide applicator license.
