The Role

Reporting to the Process & Controls Supervisor, you will be responsible for the execution of a variety of engineering projects involving the design, modification, development and maintenance of Refinery and Logistics facilities, while meeting all safety, technical, fiscal and schedule obligations. As part of your specific responsibilities, in the following areas, you will:

  • Work on smaller projects and/or as a team member of larger projects
  • Evaluate, select, specify and engineer certain control systems or products for a project
  • Assist PMs and/or senior engineers with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule
  • Support I/E activities during construction, maintenance as needed
  • Perform calculations using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software
  • Read, develop, and prepare:
    • Process Flow Diagram
    • Piping and Instrument Diagram
    • Control narratives
    • Cause and Effect charts
    • Logic diagram
    • Loop drawing
    • Ladder diagram
    • Alarm summaries
    • Specification and design of SIS
    • Instrument specifications and data sheets (process sensors, transmitters, valves, actuators, positioners, discrete sensors, analytical instruments)
    • Automation/Control system architecture drawing
    • Control systems specification and design
    • HAZOP, LOPA, SRS
    • Instrument list, I/O list
    • Installation details
  • Assist design personnel with:
    • Instrument location plan
    • PLC panel layout
    • Loop drawing
    • I/O wiring diagram
    • Wiring schematics
    • Engineering package review
  • Interface with other disciplines to develop:
    • One-line diagram
    • Electrical area classification
    • Instrumentation and controls conduit and cable schedule
    • TW installation


The Requirements

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. To be a good fit for the Instrumentation & Controls Engineer opportunity, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (preferred)
  • 5-10 years of experience in a process control and instrumentation engineering environment in the oil, gas, chemicals, or related industry; including meaningful experience with process control, logic, and control strategy design
  • Working knowledge of control systems (preferably ABB Bailey N90, S+ Engineering, Composer, A-B PLCs, ABB 800XA)
  • Understanding of instrumentation and process measurement principle, process dynamics, control tuning, control engineering principles, and practical operating knowledge
  • Programming and database administration experience
  • Knowledge and application of National Electrical Code and other applicable industry codes and standards as they apply to control system specification and design
  • General understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications
  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule
  • Experience gathering and aligning field gathered information with existing and new project documentation
  • Preferably experience with INtools/Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI), FE Sizer, Fuels Manager, PI System

Pay Range:

$107,894 - $161,841 per year

Other Compensation:
