JOB POSTING:

ICT, formerly Indian Country Today, seeks a Deputy Managing Editor to help the managing editor and digital team with the daily news coverage of the Indigenous world. We are seeking a Deputy Managing Editor who can see the big picture for national, enterprise stories and zoom in for the breaking news from the ground. ICT is very much a teamwork organization striving to build a mentoring environment where young people can jump start their careers, so we love journalists who can be coaches to young reporters.

JOB SUMMARY:

The job of the Deputy Managing Editor combines the innovation of a writer with the practical focus of an operations manager. Takes stories from the idea stage to see them through digital posting. On a day-to-day basis, the Deputy Managing Editor assists the Managing Editor in supervising the digital staff, in both daily news reporting and long-term feature reporting. Works closely with the Managing Editor to determine which stories to post online, edits stories and delegates edits on other stories. Co-leads digital team meetings, continues to improve editorial calendar workflow so that digital team has advanced notice, and input, over what stories are coming. Also works closely with the ICT Newscast team on determining which digital stories will be used in the daily broadcast. The Deputy Managing Editor will also be working with ICT news partners.

Reports directly to the Managing Editor and is a member of the editorial leadership team. Assists the Managing Editor in focusing strategically on the articulation and growth of ICT’s digital presence.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Functions as deputy to the Managing Editor, working directly with the Managing Editor on daily operations.
  • Helps oversee daily operation of the digital team.
  • Works with the Managing Editor in assigning and editing stories, and coordinating the use of photographs, graphics, videos, audio and other news content for digital platforms.
  • Supervises work of direct reports, schedules staff and conducts performance evaluations in coordination with the Managing Editor.
  • Assists the Managing Editor in hiring and coaching of digital staff.
  • Supervises work of other staff producing news for digital platforms.
  • Works on management tasks assigned by the Managing Editor, such as helping to implement a beat structure.
  • Coordinates with other digital staff members on long-term news planning.
  • Coordinates with other digital staff members on digital news training, equipment evaluation, operational protocols and standards and monitoring of emerging technologies impacting news.
  • Supports the broadcast operations, when necessary.
  • Assists in production, proofreading, editing, and social media promotion.
  • Represents ICT in the public space.
  • Resolves issues as they arise.
  • Be available for on-call, weekend, and/or late evening shifts.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Three to five years’ experience in an online operation with strong news or editorial focus preferred.
  • B.A. or master’s degree in journalism, broadcast, mass communications or comparable media curriculum containing multimedia and digital news emphasis is a plus.
  • Thorough knowledge of journalistic principles, ethics and standards.
  • Excellent news judgment.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in managing online news operations.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage briskly paced, multi-platform news operation.
  • Excellent knowledge of current and emerging technologies impacting journalism, including web, mobile and social media.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Proven working experience as a leader.
  • An eye for detail along with critical thinking.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressures.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and innovate.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with both veteran and new staff.

  • Working knowledge of a range of issues affecting Indigenous nations and peoples, along with significant regional and state-wide public affairs issues and subjects such as government and politics, the economy, education, health, immigration, legal affairs, the environment and arts a plus.

Requires a valid driver’s license.
