Job Description

To serve as a sworn law enforcement officer of the Indiana State Police, whose primary responsibility is to enforce state criminal and traffic laws and to render aid to persons in need.

The starting salary for an Indiana State Police Department Recruit is $1,807.70 bi-weekly during the academy training. At the completion of academy training, the starting salary is $51,000.00 a year.

Recruits of the 84th Recruit Academy are offered an excellent health care plan, which includes medical, dental, vision, and pharmacy coverage for both current and retired employees, along with their families, until reaching age 65. The Indiana State Police pension program provides a lifetime pension after 25 years of service. Additionally, the Indiana State Police Department provides comprehensive disability coverage and a life insurance program. Job Duties

  • Patrol county, state, and federal roads to detect and apprehend criminal and traffic law violators.
  • Investigate vehicle crashes.
  • Perform a wide variety of courtesy services.
  • Make death notifications.
  • Attempt to locate motorists and/or other persons for the delivery of emergency information.
  • Direct and control traffic at disaster scenes, accident sites, and special events.
  • Render first aid to persons until medical help arrives.
  • Conduct criminal investigations.
  • Coordinate and assist investigative efforts with Special Investigations Division.
  • Testify in criminal and traffic court.
  • Prepare and submit various reports in a complete, accurate, and timely manner.
  • Identify, collect and submit evidence in compliance with Department Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Transport emergency medical supplies, blood, etc.
  • You may be selected to serve as a Department specialty team member.
  • You may be selected to serve as a Field Training Officer.
  • Assist the Federal Aviation Administration in the investigations of aircraft crashes.
  • Present law enforcement related public affairs programs.
  • Assist local, county, and federal law enforcement agencies and other state agencies in a wide variety of areas.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Job Qualifications

  • Graduate from the Indiana State Police Academy.
  • Must possess a valid Indiana driver's license.
  • Ability to make critical decisions under adverse or emergency conditions.
  • Qualified to use Department firearms and other defensive weapons and have the ability to physically defend oneself.
  • Qualified as a First Responder.
  • Possess a working knowledge of Department Rules, Regulations, and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Qualified to operate specialized and/or technical equipment such as RADAR, VASCAR, photographic equipment, breath test instruments, videotape, and fingerprint.
  • Field Training Officers and specialty team members are required to possess additional knowledge and the ability to effectively use their unique skills and techniques.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and design acceptable alternative solutions.
  • Possess a working knowledge of substantive criminal and traffic law, criminal law procedures, and the rules of evidence.
  • Knowledgeable in various criminal methodologies and procedures for conducting criminal investigations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Perform general police duties.

The Application and the Physical Ability Test:
The application and the Physical Ability Test (PAT) assessment are combined components of this process. Both must be completed on or before April 29, 2023.

  • Applicants must attend at least one PAT assessment and pass all 5 components consecutively.
  • Applicants who fail any component of the PAT assessment may schedule to attend another PAT assessment on or before April 29, 2023.
  • If the applicant attends multiple PAT assessments, only the most recent PAT will be recorded.
