Overview:

The Cyber Identity and Biometrics (CIB) group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) conducts research, development, and deployment of human and group recognition technologies to address national security and other worldwide challenges. Our core research capabilities are biometrics, computer vision, machine learning, data analytics, computational imaging, image reconstruction, signal and image processing, and electronics. In general, CIB’s activities involve first-class interdisciplinary research with other research groups at ORNL, collaborations with private industry and academic partners across the nation, and mission-specific support for our national security research sponsors. Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support senior staff in the design, development, and prototyping of novel biometrics sensors and devices contributing technical support in both mechanical and electrical expertise.
  • Provide support to senior staff in the ruggedization, testing, and evaluation of unique biometric capabilities both internally developed by the CIB team and external to ORNL.
  • Provide general support to biometric human subjects testing (HST) that underpins the CIB group’s development and evaluation of novel biometrics algorithms and systems.
  • Provide expertise in building models for additive manufacturing techniques to support various project efforts in the portfolio of the CIB group.
  • Familiarity with a variety of machining and manufacturing techniques to support prototype development.
  • This position requires a passion for mission-focused National Security challenges.
  • US citizen and security clearance.


Required Qualifications
:

  • Bachelors with 5 years of experience or a Master's degree with 4 years of experience in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Hands-on skills and experience developing prototype systems used for sensing for National Security applications.
  • Excellent skills using tools such as Solidworks for model construction.
  • Proven experience in supporting the execution of large-scale human subjects testing events for National Security or biometrics related technologies.
  • Current training and certification (CITI) for Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved projects.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying technical material to both scientists and non-scientists in both written and oral presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-direct in the completion of complex tasks.
  • Self-disciplined work ethic and eagerness to tackle challenging research problems.
  • Strong desire to work in a team environment and ability to lead small teams.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance of Q//SCI from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing and designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with general purpose programming languages such as Python or MATLAB.
  • Experience working in Agile/SCRUM teams.
  • Familiarity with federal funding procedures, regulations, policies and practices.
  • Experience developing and managing research projects.


Special Requirement:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing and designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due to the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
