The University of Virginia's Health System Physical Plant Zone 3, within Facilities Management (FM), invites applications for an HVAC Mechanic or HVAC Senior Assistant who will provide expertise in the Refrigeration Shop.

HVAC Mechanics will perform repair and maintenance of various refrigeration equipment, including but not limited to, water coolers, ice machines, walk-in boxes, refrigerators and freezers. Other duties may include journey level installation, repair, and maintenance on a variety of package and central heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, preventative maintenance, servicing, overhauling, and maintaining a variety of small package units or large central units; and determining equipment needs in an academic, residential, and Medical Center environment. HVAC Mechanics receive job assignments from a supervisor, however, most work is performed with little supervision.

HVAC Senior Assistants assist HVAC Mechanics with HVAC repairs and work independently as appropriate, clean job sites, train on more advanced installations and emergency repairs, and follow all customer service and safety protocols. The incumbent hired at this level will be considered for promotion once they have attained the required experience and licensure for the next level.

Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure and grounds, as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

HVAC Mechanic Duties Include:

  • Perform repair and maintenance of various refrigeration equipment, including but not limited to, water coolers, ice machines, walk-in boxes, refrigerators and freezers.

  • Perform HVAC installation and repairs, along with diagnostic and preventative maintenance on a variety of air conditioning units, ventilation equipment, and temperature and humidity controls, and refrigeration equipment.

  • Specify, estimate, and install equipment, refrigeration, and systems in accordance with applicable standards and requirements.

  • Respond to emergency requests.

  • Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.

  • Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, the National Electrical Code, and The Joint Commission.

  • Assist other trades and become familiar with various equipment and sequence of operation.

HVAC Senior Assistant Duties Include:

  • Perform HVAC repairs, along with diagnostic and preventative maintenance on a variety of air conditioning units, ventilation equipment, and temperature and humidity controls, and refrigeration equipment.

  • Develop an increasing knowledge of types of material and equipment used for the various utility systems involved in University projects.

  • Maintain accurate records on time tickets, job requests, and work orders.

  • Determine material and equipment for specific jobs, as well as initiate purchase orders.

  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. Use personal safety equipment as instructed, and act in accordance with safety guidelines.

  • Meet with and respond to customer requests on work status in coordination with supervisor.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Experience: A minimum of four years of HVAC experience is required. Experience working in a hospital or clinical environment experience is strongly preferred.

  • Licensure: Journeyman HVAC license required for those at the HVAC Mechanic level. Valid Driver's License.

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks, including a health screen prior to the start date of the position.

Compensation:

The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is:

  • HVAC Mechanic: $22.50 – $28.50 per hour ($46,800 - $59,280 Annually) .

  • HVAC Senior Assistant: $21.50 - $25.50 Hourly ($44,720 - $53,040 Annually).

Physical Demands:

Employee must be able to variously sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands-on repetitive tasks (including overhead tasks). Employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
