Lake Superior Consulting is looking to hire a HR and Benefits Specialist position in our office in Duluth or Minneapolis, MN.

This individual is responsible for directing and planning the day-to-day operations of group benefits programs (group health, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, worker's compensation, life insurance, travel and accident plan, flexible spending plan, retirement plans, etc.). This position provides excellent customer service and designs quality benefits plans. The HR and Benefits Specialist continually investigates new benefits programs, makes suggestions to leadership on how to improve existing programs, and monitors benefits administration.


Responsibilities:


  • With support from Broker and HR Director, analyze current benefits, evaluate the use, services, coverage, effectiveness, cost, plan experience and competitive trends in benefits programs in choosing plan options on an annual basis.

  • With support from the HR Director, Design, recommend and implement new benefits programs. Examine possible plan designs and benefits cost changes.

  • Gather employee data and oversee the processing of monthly billings and the preparation of vouchers for payment of administrative fees to vendors.

  • Oversee maintenance of employee benefits, maintain group benefits database and update employee payroll records.

  • With support from broker, perform plan audits. Prepare, collect and organize data for actuarial assessments. Review data in conjunction with actuarial evaluation task forces.

  • Monitor administrative costs of benefits programs and recommend cost containment strategies, including alternative methods for administration and funding. Support the HR Director with budgetary recommendations and assist in the monitoring, verifying and reconciling of budgeted funds.

  • Design and distribute materials for benefits orientations, open enrollment and summary plan descriptions. Provide training and support to group benefits associates, home office associates and the field staff.

  • Coordinate daily benefits processing. Handle enrollments, COBRA, terminations, changes, beneficiaries, disability, accident and death claims, rollovers, distributions, loans, hardships, compliance testing, etc.

  • Evaluate and revise internal processes to reduce costs and increase efficiency.

  • Responsible for leave administration

    • Manage in-house FMLA requests

    • Submit STD payments to payroll

    • Answer STD/LTD questions as needed

    • Review timesheets to ensure proper leave coding

  • Manage day-to-day responsibilities associated with companies 401k plan and support HR Director and retirement committee on setting strategy

  • Manage LSC Wellness Program

  • Support recruiting efforts and HR projects as needed

  • Ensure annual EEO-1 reporting is completed and accurate

Position Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field

  • Previous benefits or HR experience preferred

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations specifically related to benefits administration

  • Knowledge of FMLA and leave laws and regulations and ability to explain leave options to employees

  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders

  • Maintain strong confidentiality and integrity at all times

  • Effectively prioritize multiple tasks
