Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of this position is to perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist on duty.

Scope of Responsibility

The Histology Technician will take tissue specimens received from surgical, and diagnostic cases are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the standards required. Other duties include logging, batching, cutting, mounting and staining procedures.

Upon receiving written orders from physicians or their designees, the Histology Technician will coordinate daily workflow of tasks and activities in the surgical pathology area with regard to routine procedures, special procedures, and the surgery schedule.

Job Requirements

• Associate Degree in Medical Technology or related field
• Certification as an HT or HTL by ASCP or be eligible for certification within one year
• Graduate of an accredited school of Histotechnology or Medical Technology as an HT or MLT and/or experience level for certification as required by Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI)
• Must be a Registered Histology Technician (ASCP) or be eligible for such registration, or have a high school education and a minimum of five years experience as a Histology Technician, or have a minimum of one year training under the direction of a Registered Histology Technologist
• Minimum1 year experience preferred
