JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintenance and repair of automotive, heavy trucks, and construction equipment. Duties entail performing all aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair, including engine and transmission, as well as conducting electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics.

GENERAL TASK DESCRIPTION:

  • Provide maintenance and repair of various vehicles on US Military installation: Ensure work performed conforms to OEM or military standards as identified in technical manuals and other documentation.
  • Perform all aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair on assigned military and civilian vehicles and equipment. These include but are not limited to off-road vehicles, heavy trucks, and prime mover trucks.
  • Analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains heavy equipment, such as tractor trucks, prime movers, buses, trailers, stake trucks, box trucks, and some construction equipment.
  • Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
  • Dismantle and reassemble equipment, using hoists and hand tools.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment on which initial or final maintenance inspections are conducted.
  • Utilize computer-based repair and parts support databases.
  • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
  • Provide analysis of repairs performed on vehicles and provide recommendations that will address the prevention of similar equipment failures.
  • Perform engine, transmission, and electrical troubleshooting/diagnostics on assigned equipment. Determine required repair parts.
  • Identify and order correct repair parts through Government and/or civilian procurement channels.
  • Repair, rebuild, and/or overhaul assemblies of internal combustion engines, to include replacing worn or broken parts. These include such items as piston rings, bearings, or other engine parts.
  • Grind and adjust valves, rebuild carburetors, and overhaul transmissions. Repair fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems.
  • Perform front-end alignments, repair tires, tracks, and other components.
  • Provide guidance and training to customer personnel in operation, maintenance, and inspection procedures/techniques.
  • Replace defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions.
  • Test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
  • Weld broken parts and structural members.
  • Comply with policies and procedures as set forth in the company’s Handbook of Policy and Procedure.
  • Comply with provisions of the corporation’s Standard Practice Procedures manual and DoD 5220.22-M when handling classified information to include generating, marking, storing, handling, and destroying classified material.
  • Work, cooperate and communicate, as directed by the Program Manager, with other supervisors, team leaders, and coworkers satisfactorily.

EDUCATION

  • Must be certified as a Heavy Truck Mechanic by ASE, possess an Associate degree in Automobile Sciences or have comparable, verifiable on-the-job experience. Preferred candidate will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in heavy line, at either a civilian vehicle or military repair facility.

MINIMUM SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be knowledgeable and have experience in quality control inspection policy and procedures.
  • Preferred candidate will have experience in using computer-based repair and parts support databases.
  • Must be qualified to operate all vehicles and equipment on which initial or final maintenance inspections are conducted.
  • Must have valid driver’s license. CDL licenses are a plus.
  • Hold Current Secret Clearance or able to obtain Secret Clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Location: Virginia Beach, VA.
  • Travel may be required up to <5% of time.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Carrying and Lifting. Ability to transport and lift up to 50 lbs.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $1.00 - $2.00 per year
