Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Receives requests or instructions for surgical procedures. Interprets requests or instructions for medical or health care personnel. Receives assignments for a variety of difficult examinations.
  • Receives assignment for the following procedures: EKG, Cast removal/Cutting, Surgical Scrubs, assists with Thoracentesis, Complicated dressings, Unna Boot replacements, podiatric nail trimming, assists with proctology examinations/set and Phlebotomy.
  • Performs manual podiatric toenail debridement and observes and reports significant clinical changes. Enters a treatment note into a CPRS template, completes an electronic encounter form for that visit and sets a reappointment date for future treatment as appropriate.
  • Correctly performs manual podiatric toenail debridement with minimal discomfort to the patient and maximal care taken to protect normal tissue structures and care of diabetic ulcers. Accurately completes the podiatric toenail debridement progress note template and electronic encounter form in CPRS. Identifies significant clinical changes and promptly reports them to the assigned clinic attending.
  • Secures patients' confidence and cooperation during procedures. Explains procedures, positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate. Various procedure or position to adjust to patients' medical condition. Independently explains procedures and positions patients for a variety of difficult procedures such as joint injections, cast placement or removal, proctology exams, endoscope ENT exams, Assists health care professional to position patient and answer patient's questions during complex procedures. Responds to emergency situations such as cardiopulmonary failure, hemorrhaging, and shock by assisting in the performance of resuscitation measures. Operates and maintains equipment such as Medivator, equipment for cast cutters, endoscopes, and microscopes, dynamaps, suctioning equipment, hemorrhoid banding equipment, EKG machines, pulse oxzimeters, IPAX (computer for outside CD reading) and all other equipment not listed above for diagnostic and treatment procedures.
  • Determines technical factors, sets controls and operates equipment and instruments. Adjusts and adapts specialized equipment for difficult procedures. Selects and sets equipment's technical factors for a variety of difficult tests or procedures. Sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required, and sets indicators for measurements or readings necessary for requested procedures. This would include all equipment previously listed. Locates and sets up equipment and all accessories and understands proper positioning. Adjusts equipment placement for patient's comfort. Notifies physician of test results and ensures original results are included in the permanent record. Maintains clinical files. Orders and maintains supplies for the unit. Orders and maintains specialized supplies and instruments used in the unit.
  • Assists medical staff with or performs diagnostic procedures used to diagnose medical conditions. Adjusts, adapts, and operates specialized equipment and accessories needed for difficult procedures. Performs difficult specialized tests and measurements that are preliminary to the physician's treatment of the patient. This would include all medical equipment previously mentioned. Assures that patient is positioned for accurate and effective measurements and readings. Interprets results to determine completeness of information required by the physician's orders. Adjusts equipment and retakes tests as indicated. Recognizes abnormalities and brings them to the attention of the appropriate physician/nurse. Demonstrates use, purpose and care of instruments and accompanying accessories. Locates and sets up equipment and all accessories and understands proper positioning. Operates and maintains medical instruments. Notifies physician of results and ensures original results are included in the permanent record. Maintains clinical files. Works with staff to coordinate the patient's surgical process through the clinic area and follows up with patient to provide a seamless transition to post operative care. Orders and maintains supplies for the unit, to include specialized supplies and reusable medical equipment/instruments used on the unit. Provides orientation/training to staff regarding equipment or instruments used by position (nippers). Provides assistance of a technical, specialized, or support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: 7:30am-4:00pm Monday thru Friday.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
  • SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician. Specialized experience includes utilizing knowledge of medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, and aseptic technique to prepare and protect sterile field during surgery; exercising sterile technique to include sterilizer operations and tests to determine the effectiveness of sterilization, packaging, storage, and shelf life; handling medical instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures; performing proper cleaning techniques, as well as the proper handling and rotation of sterile supplies; handling contaminated items, quality control, and personal hygiene, using knowledge of universal precautions and implementing infection control policies and procedures. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~

    EDUCATION: Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~

    COMBINATION: Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
