Head Start to Success Program
8 hours per day, 5 days per week, 190-day calendar
Temporary Position for 2022-23 School Year

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION:
The Head Start to Success Health, Safety and Nutrition Specialist will be responsible for the implementation of a high quality Head Start health, safety and nutrition program that adheres to the objectives of the health and nutrition components as specified in the Head Start Performance Standards. The Specialist will develop menus, review individual child and family nutrition data and develop individual nutrition plans, confer with program staff and families about health and nutrition-related issues, provide health and nutrition education, training, and ongoing coaching and consultation to Head Start teachers and family visitors.

Head Start is built upon the understanding that child and family development takes place in a community and effective programs build upon and link families with community resources. For this reason, Head Start to Success is designed to link with schools, social service agencies, health services and childcare services. In this way, Head Start to Success achieves the Head Start mission of supporting families in preparing their children for kindergarten success. Head Start to Success continues to be an innovative Head Start program that combines supportive educational home visits with an enhanced, educationally rich prekindergarten program. Head Start to Success provides comprehensive services for Clackamas County's children and their families. Enrolled children receive a quality preschool experience in their own community and the family is supported through home visits and offered comprehensive education, nutrition, health and social services. The programs funding comes from the state of Oregon and follows all of the Federal Head Start guidelines and standards.

CLACKAMAS EDUCATION SERVICE DISTRICT:
Clackamas Education Service District is one of Oregon's 19 ESDs charged with providing programs for children with special needs, technology support, school improvement, and administrative services to local school districts and the Oregon Department of Education. Clackamas ESD serves ten school districts in Clackamas County, including Canby, Colton, Estacada, Gladstone, Lake Oswego, Molalla River, North Clackamas, Oregon City, Oregon Trail, and West Linn-Wilsonville.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Collaborates with district partners to develop monthly meal plans that adhere to Head Start nutritional requirements
  • Ensures Head Start classrooms have adequate and appropriate snacks and health and safety supplies
  • Assists Head Start staff in implementing high quality health, safety and nutrition practices in the classroom
  • Consults with Head Start staff, families, and service providers in delivering well-balanced and nutritious meals and snacks for young children
  • Consults with Head Start staff, families, and service providers on the importance of physical activity for children and assists them to implement appropriate activity in their setting

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered Dietitian with American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, or the ability to become registered within a reasonable timeframe
  • Two or more years experience as a professional service provider or administrator in an early childhood setting or a child health-related field
  • Familiarity with community, state and federal health care resources, and ability to assist early childhood educators and families with these resources
  • Ability to support and train early childhood educators in a variety of ways including in-service training, on-site modeling, coaching, technical assistance, phone consultation, establishing a mentor relationship, or by guidance to professional resources in the community
  • Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of current Head Start rules and regulations
