Great camp counselors can come in all shapes and sizes. Some are loud, some are quiet, some are athletic, some are artistic, some are funny, some are musical, some make bracelets for all their campers and other make up crazy handshakes, nicknames, or dances. One thing they all have in common, however, is they all like being around kids. If you have good energy, a great heart, and a desire to help kids grow you would be a great addition to our camp team.


SAY Head Counselors are cause driven and devoted. They care about how their camper’s day went and want to be a part of positive family conversation at the dinner table. Head counselors are involved in all aspects of their camper’s experience at the SAY and strive to go the extra mile!

The SAY has camps in four locations, Watchung Reservation, Springfield Pool, Summit YMCA and the Berkeley Heights YMCA. There are open Head Camp Counselor positions for all locations.

The 12 week Camp Season runs 6/12/23 – 9/1/23. Scheduled ours are Monday - Friday with 8 hour daily shifts.

Pre-Camp program begins at 7am and Post Camp ends at 6:30pm. Required pre-season camp training begins May 23, 2023.

Competitive Salaries starting at $16.00/hour, based on experience. Free SAY membership while actively employed.

The Head Counselor is responsible for providing a diverse and enriching camp program following the guidelines set by the American Camping Association and the YMCA while maintaining a safe and enriching environment for children. They are responsible for planning and implementing activities that coincide with the weekly camp theme in addition to maintaining rosters and other camp documents deemed appropriate by the coordinator/director. Must maintain proper camper to counselor ratio and is responsible for supervising children at ALL TIMES. The Head counselor will demonstrate the proper procedures and lead by example for running day to day camp activities.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or its equivalency.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old.
  • At least 2 years child care, camp or educational experience.
  • A background in recreation, camping or sports is favorable.
  • Must have good overall leadership skills, excellent communication and organizational skills, a cooperative attitude, and the ability to work with and understand the needs of children.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications are required prior to the beginning of camp season; training provided by YMCA.

Camp Staff must be able to attend pre season camp training beginning May 23, 2023.
