DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides guidance, career support, counseling and case management services to individual students to address academic, personal, social, or emotional issues related to their educational progress and achievement.
  • Consults with students, parents, teachers, administrators and members of both the school and the student services team to define and implement an appropriate course of study given the student's strengths, aptitudes, interests and long-term career goals.
  • Facilitates access to career exploration and planning tools as well as articulation of post-secondary plans.
  • Works closely with staff members, parents and other specialists to assist in the assessment, planning and program development for at-risk students and/or those referred to the Child Support Team.
  • Initiates and plans in-service programs for staff, parents and community members.
  • Assists in the development of prevention programs and provides counseling and crisis intervention for individuals and small groups as the need arises.
  • Communicates clearly and succinctly in both oral and written form, supervises the appropriate use and confidentiality of student records, and maintains reports of contacts with students, parents, private practitioners, agencies, etc., as related to specific students.
  • Serves on established committees and attends meetings as required including beyond the normal professional workday.
  • Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of New York State learning standards, FERPA, and state regulations.
  • Evidences a clear commitment to professional growth and skill development.
  • Works with families to facilitate understanding, promote constructive participation in resolving difficulties their child (ren) may be experiencing, and increase awareness of the availability of appropriate resources, making referrals to community agencies, services and programs for additional services when appropriate.
  • Demonstrates a willingness/ability to contribute to the school community through participation in school-wide events.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Building Administration and/or Office of Exceptional Education and Student Services.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities and familiar with all IDEA and 504 regulations.
  • Skilled at triage (referral to community agencies and/or providers) and communicating effectively with private practitioners.

  • Intervention experience
  • Prior school counseling experience - 2-3 years of high school preferred
  • Background knowledge and experience with special education students
  • Creative and willing to assert himself or herself when working with counseling staff in developing programs
  • Experience and willingness to oversee the administration of advanced placement and/or PSAT exams at North HS if necessary.

REPORTS TO: Building Administration, the Coordinators for Special Education, and the Assistant Superintendent for Exceptional Education and Student Services
