The Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, New York, seeks an experienced Grants Writer for state and federal grant applications (e.g., NYSCA, NEA, NEH, etc.). This is a contract position.

To achieve the organization’s mission and goals for active public engagement, the Grants Writer will produce professional and effective grant proposals, submissions, and required reports. This position interacts with Museum staff members, including senior leadership. Reports to the Deputy Director & Director of Development. Learn more about the Museum at Heckscher.org.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Reviews and understands current state and federal grant criteria, content requirements, submission processes, and deadlines. Attends virtual grant workshops.
2. Works with staff to research, strategize and prepare proposals, project budgets, and required supplementary materials for curatorial, education, facilities, and organizational initiatives.
3. Writes and prepares required materials for applications.
4. Completes and submits applications on deadline.
5. Prepares required interim and/or final reports to grant agency.

Anticipated Deliverables

1. On average, submit 1-2 proposals per month
2. Submission of grant applications resulting in successful awards
3. Timely completion of reporting requirements

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

1. Proven experience in writing state/federal grant applications and demonstration of success in securing grant awards. Knowledge of the arts, education, and community engagement spaces is preferred.
2. Experience with online NYS grants, federal Grants.gov and other government grant submission systems.
3. Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills, this includes expertise in English grammar, syntax, and punctuation.
4. Effective project management, time management, and organizational skills.
5. Enthusiastic self-starter who can effectively work with others and independently.
6. Ability to learn and understand subject-specific terminology and information, especially that pertaining to fine art, education, and museum-related projects.
7. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google docs.
8. For possible remote hours, a secure internet connection is required.
