Purpose of Position

The Grant Writer Manager is a core member of a 10-person development department, with a key role in the Roosevelt Institute’s fundraising strategy. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Development Manager is responsible for grant writing and stewardship management for a portfolio of foundations and major donors; collaborating with the team on logistics, communications, and donor cultivation/stewardship; conducting research and analysis on grants, donors, and prospects; supporting with overall fundraising pipeline; and other related activities.

This is a non-management, unionized, individual contributor role.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director of Development, the Development team, and senior staff to execute on fundraising strategy for the Roosevelt Institute.
  • Conduct the full range of activities required to research, write, prepare, and submit concept notes, grant proposals, and reports. This includes: collaborating with staff and fellows to write, edit, and proofread complex grant proposals and reports; ensuring the completion and accuracy of all proposal attachments; and managing deadlines for timely submissions and efficient workflow.
  • Ensure written materials are up to date and consistent with organizational priorities.
  • Identify funding opportunities, conduct research on funding prospects, develop summaries for review by executive and senior team.
  • Support in building relationships with new and prospective donors.
  • Support development team on managing portfolio of donors and implementing cultivation/stewardship strategies
  • Prepare Development team, executive team, and senior staff for upcoming meetings and events.
  • Manage the development calendar and fundraising pipeline through Salesforce, tracking deadlines for the timely submission of grant materials and managing up to senior staff for all departmental projects and activities to ensure best-in-class donor stewardship.
  • Work with development and communications teams to craft other donor-facing materials, as needed.
  • Liaise with finance and program teams, as needed.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-5 years grant writing experience in the nonprofit field.
  • Track record of writing winning proposals that yield grants from a variety of institutions.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and thriving in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to collect, synthesize, and process information quickly and with accuracy.
  • Ability to present complex programmatic strategies and activities in narratives that are approachable for and tailored to specific funder audiences.
  • Understanding of philanthropic environment and best practices in fundraising.
  • Highly organized, with outstanding attention to detail.
  • Experience using donor databases like Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, etc.

Salary Range: $67,735.53 - $75,000
