The Infrastructure Global Business Unit (GBU) is executing site civil and marine scopes of work associated with our scopes of work on the Energy GBU LNG projects. The candidate will serve as the Geotechnical Resident Engineer on the upcoming Rio Grande LNG project. The work location is Brownsville, TX. This position is contingent upon project award.


Job Overview:

The Geotechnical Field Engineer is responsible for activities relating to construction engineering within the civil discipline. The applicant shall provide engineering assistance for Geotechnical subjects, assist superintendents, and contractors. Inspect and verify compliance with Geotechnical requirements and recommendations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with engineering on constructability and design issues relating to the civil discipline such as steel erection.
  • Establish a civil design/field engineering working relationship and lines of communication with the Engineer of Record, including agreement on civil engineering deliverables and overall construction application configuration management.
  • Responsible for quantity take-off, control, tracking, reporting and forecasting for civil discipline.
  • Specify the civil criteria for construction of temporary construction facilities as required.
  • Coordinate with the Procurement Organization for field procured materials, material substitution, services and equipment such reinforcing steel and platework.
  • Review material receiving reports and warehousing to assure delivery of correct civil materials.
  • Coordinate and monitor the interfaces for civil data exchange to support the construction automation plan and the project controls program requirements at the jobsite.
  • Subsurface explorations and soil logging
  • Sampling of soils and aggregates by ASTM methods
  • Review and interpret field and laboratory soil test results
  • Evaluation and monitoring of the geotechnical aspects of the construction activities
  • Field evaluation report preparation
  • Civil Work Package planning and writing
  • Develop and manage the civil construction quality program.
  • Direct preparation of cost estimates for civil construction activities and coordinate the preparation of cost reports, forecast and progress reports.
  • Coordinate with Field Supervision and Subcontractors to plan/support construction schedules.
  • Plan and recommend civil procedures to be implemented by Field Supervision to ensure construction operations are within requirements of engineering design and specifications.
  • Work with customer’s resident engineering and operating personnel to coordinate civil construction activities.
  • Coordinate subcontract activities to ensure civil materials, equipment and quality comply with design plans and specifications.
  • Implement controls over variables affecting civil installation job progress such as steel erection and platework receipt. Also ensure engineering and procurement provide timely delivery of drawings, materials and equipment and that other corporate programs are fully utilized.
  • Perform other duties as required by Bechtel management.


Qualifications and Skills:

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in civil engineering with emphasis on geotechnical engineering and/or civil design from an accredited university as well as a minimum of 10-12 years relevant work experience; in lieu of education a minimum of 15+ years relevant experience is required.
  • Must be physically capable to conduct field inspections and participate in project walkdowns which require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing in very small and/or confined spaces, and lifting up to 60 lbs.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have working knowledge of structural construction operations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H). Demonstrated commitment to a Zero Accident safety program.
  • Must be computer-literate in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Must be familiar with current industry quality standards.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience in field engineering activities of nuclear power and non-reactor nuclear facility EPC projects.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in construction materials testing and/or construction site development with knowledge of basic soil mechanics, soil type identification, foundation design and evaluation, subgrade evaluation, soil sampling, and ASTM laboratory and field soil testing methods.
  • Experience in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain geologic areas desirable
  • Basic knowledge of concrete properties, production, and placement also desirable
  • Ability to exercise excellent sound engineering judgement with ability to explain decisions to a wide range of people and disciplines
  • Able to read and understand project plans and drawings and specifications.
  • Very good written and oral communication skills
  • Strong observational skills.
  • Physically fit and capable of lifting 20 pounds.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to quickly learn.
  • Willingness to work long hours in the field.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Intermediate understanding of production management including scheduling.
  • Intermediate communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Intermediate knowledge of cost management including estimating and forecast development.
  • Previous supervisory experience within civil discipline.
