Requisition Id 9938

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Geoinformatics Engineering Group, within the Human Dynamics Section of the Geospatial Science and Human Security Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), specializes in research and development of science and technology to address challenges with large-scale distributed geospatial information, including its collection and storage, real-time and high-performance processing, visualization, dissemination, and the infrastructure necessary for optimal use across multiple network domains.

The group is seeking a geospatial systems architect to research, design and develop geospatial data platforms, services, and computing with a focus on deploying real-time data architectures, designing hybrid cloud systems, and programming scalable application for the next generation of geospatial science.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The right person for this challenge will be a senior system architect who will focus on the design and implementation of full-stack scalable systems and data solutions for high-volume and high-velocity scientific data applications. The proposed solutions will include high performance computing that can be applicable for several geospatially focused research and development projects in energy, transportation, national security, and other cross-disciplinary geospatial domains. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Research, develop and deploy advanced data architectures with various IT technologies including cloud technologies, web technologies like JavaScript, Java, PHP, NodeJS, Angular, Docker, etc. and databases such as MongoDB, PostgreSQL, etc.
  • Understand the scientific and technological landscape by maintaining a strong knowledge profile of scalable data platforms including backend, middleware, web-technologies and be able to provide input on pros and cons on combinations of technologies.
  • Develop new engineering algorithms, workflows, and frameworks for solving technical problems.
  • Utilize open-source and commercial tools and approaches to solve complex problems including information retrieval/extraction, machine learning/deep learning, and knowledge graph.
  • Conduct software development and engineering to support project-specific applications of spatial computing and real-time data platforms.
  • Work with researchers and project sponsors to capture, understand, integrate, and implement project requirements in developed services and software.
  • Collaborate with a highly diverse and multidisciplinary team – from geographers, mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists, and engineers – in research, development, integration, testing, and deployment.
  • Collaborate on scholarly products such as patents, papers, proposals, presentations, and reports.
  • Contribute to committees and panels at relevant conferences, and open-source software project repositories, and professional societies

  • A MS or PhD in engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, natural sciences, or related discipline with at least 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Technical experience in big data computing, e.g., data streaming and analytics at large volume and high velocity
  • At least 5 years of experience developing software related to a field involving geospatial computing and big data architectures.
  • Proficient with at least one of following languages: Python, C/C++, R, C#, Java; knowledgeable in Linux, shell scripting.
  • Experience with geospatial software libraries (gdal, pdal, etc.) and geospatial web libraries such as leaflet, openlayers, and mapbox.
  • Experience with software development best practices including, but not limited to: Agile development; version control using Git/GitFlow or similar system; and project management via systems like JIRA, Asana, etc.
  • Experience with Airflow or similar workflow management frameworks, open-source geospatial tools and system such as OGC web services, web development frameworks, or other GIS software such as ArcMap or QGIS.
  • Excellent understanding of the software development life cycle.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in high-performance computing, cloud computing, and scalable system architectures. Specifically, AWS or GCP and technologies including but not limited to GeoMesa, Apache Sedona, Alloy DB, Platform and Infrastructure as a service are a plus.
  • Hands-on involvement in DevOps, software systems, data systems, analytics, and computer-driven distributed data processing.
  • Experience with real-time data and processing architectures.
  • Engineering experience in transforming research products into community solutions in related science domains, such as geography and energy sciences.
  • Strong track record on publications, presentations, and community engagement.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to a scientific audience.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and frequently interacting teams of researchers.
