About the Research Department

Our mission is to understand how the world works — building and compounding our understanding of the timeless cause-and-effect relationships that move global economies and markets. With curiosity, cutting-edge technology, and deep sets of data, we build frameworks and analytical models that explain everything from long-term debt cycles to currency devaluations; and we use that compounded understanding to create the investment strategies that drive Bridgewater.

About the Team

The primary responsibility of the Geopolitics Research team is to integrate a rigorous understanding of government actions, international relations, and other less economically motivated drivers into Bridgewater's investment thinking. The team generates differentiated insights into the causes and effects of global policy developments by combining fundamental research with Bridgewater's differentiated approach to developing timeless and universal insights. Our approach is highly systematic, allowing us to compound our understanding over time and translate into tradable rules for managing money for our client portfolios.

About the Role

We are looking for a Research Associate who can work closely with senior investors to understand, analyze, and synthesize geopolitical developments and their implications for economics and markets, with an affinity for compounding those insights into our investment systems.

You will drive the following responsibilities:

  • Perceiving and monitoring a broad range of themes and risks that could have significant implications for global markets
  • Building out an understanding of key policy issues in a flexible and efficient manner, synthesizing across a range of inputs
  • Analyzing data relating to politics, policy issues, and their connection to economies and markets, in connection with qualitative research and rigorous frameworks for how these cause-effect linkages might work
  • Drafting research reports that communicate our team's insights to senior investors at Bridgewater and the external world (including through Bridgewater's Daily Observations)
  • Helping to compound Bridgewater's understanding of these issues over time by collaborating closely with other researchers on the team and contributing to our systematic investment process

You will be a click for the role if you:

  • A deep interest in international affairs and policy issues, and a curiosity about how these drivers operate and affect economies and markets
  • The ability to approach new questions in a structured, highly logical way, using data rigorously and creatively to analyze complex economic relationships
  • An affinity for compounding our insights over time (developing a first-class understanding of available data, building data models and algorithmic systems to solve complex investment problems, and creating dashboards that enable us to monitor evolving conditions over time). Technical aptitude/coding experience would be valuable.
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills
  • Prior work experience in government, or in a private sector/think-tank role oriented toward understanding governments and international affairs
  • A drive to constantly improve and achieve excellence together (underpinned by a high degree of ownership, willingness to give and receive direct feedback, and an ability to collaborate effectively)

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4-year degree from an accredited undergraduate institution
  • Demonstrated success conducting research into questions at the intersection of politics and economics, leveraging data and synthesizing a range of qualitative inputs
