Salary: $1,750 - $2,394 semi-monthly *Salary may be based of education and/or experience

Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri Geological Survey, and will be located at 111 Fairgrounds Road, Rolla, MO 65401.

This will be a geologist position managing geodatabases concerning water well construction and dealing with subsurface geology and water quality. This position specifically assists with public drinking water wells. You will gain knowledge of Missouri’s geology, learn the differences in water quality and availability throughout the state, build and maintain ESRI geodatabases, and aid in communications with external clients and the Department of Natural Resources. You may also perform in office investigations of well sites for geologic and hydrologic characteristics. There could be opportunities to log well cuttings, insoluble residues, and analyze pump tests if the candidate is interested. Expect to be located indoors for the majority of your time investigating complex data.

What you’ll do:

  • Coordinating with multiple DNR entities, the drilling industry, engineers, and the public
  • Managing existing public water supply (PWS) geodatabases, including the State’s Safe Drinking Water Inventory System (SDWIS)
  • Use ESRI GIS applications
  • Develop a working knowledge of the community and non-community PWS well design standards and the Missouri Well Construction Rules
  • Provide assistance to the public, engineering companies, drilling industry, and other department staff on PWS well construction issues
  • Process rock cuttings for permanent storage
  • Examine rock cuttings to determine any potential subsurface geologic problems that may affect the well’s ability to provide suitable drinking water, identify aquifer formation contacts, and create well logs for all newly constructed PWS wells
  • Research and write estimated casing depth and final casing depth approval letters for PWS wells
  • Assist in Groundwater Under the Direct Influence of Surface Water investigations

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science/geology, or hydrology

And 0-4 years of experience in environmental geology, hydrology, geohydrology, stratigraphy, and GIS

(Additional education or experience may substitute for the required education or experience)

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to work in an office setting with continued exposure to computer monitors
  • Ability to use and master various software packages including but not limited to: AQTESOLV, ESRI ArcMap or ArcPro, and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to interpret various types of correspondence
  • Ability to do extensive research in various mediums such as paper files, microfiche, and databases

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to travel with occasional overnight trips
  • Experience managing data and database maintenance
  • Interpersonal, communication, and writing skills
  • Enjoy working independently with minor teamwork
  • Ability to lift 50-80 lbs and be able to stay on ones feet for extended periods of time
