Position Information


TxDOT's Lufkin District is looking for a General Transportation Tech (Roadway Maintenance Tech) I or II based in Shepherd, TX. This position performs routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, routine and contract maintenance inspection, bridge inspection and record keeping, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, assisting the public during emergency situations, and training other employees.

This position is for one General Transportation Tech I or II. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Position Description


General Transportation Tech I
: Performs routine (Learning) transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, maintenance, and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

General Transportation Tech II: Performs moderately complex (Intermediate) transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, contract maintenance, and material and process inspections roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.


Essential Duties:

General Transportation Tech I or II:

  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accidents sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly-skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Moves/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional duties for a General Transportation Tech II include:

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling machine.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills

Experience:
General Transportation Tech I: None

General Transportation Tech II: 1 year in engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation, roadway maintenance work, or related experience.*

  • Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

General Transportation Tech I:

The following Licenses and Certifications are required for this job:

  • Safety Impact Certificate*
  • Commercial Driver Certificate*
  • Valid Driver License at time of Application
  • Safety Impact and Commercial Driver Certifications are not required at the time of application.

**Must have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class "A" or have obtained a CDL Class "A”, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.**

General Transportation Tech II:

The following Licenses and Certifications are required for this job:

  • Safety Impact Certificate*
  • Commercial Driver Certificate
  • Commercial Driver License Class A (Required at time of Application)
  • Safety Impact is not required at the time of application. Safety Certification will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Commercial Driver’s License

  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

General Transportation Tech I:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to vibration
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device

General Trans Tech II:

Physical Requirements include all of the above and:

  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
