Salary Plan/Grade:

  • General Transportation Tech I: A14 ($37,200.00 - $49,134.00/yearly)
  • General Transportation Tech II: A15 ($40,800.00 - $52,045.00/yearly)
  • General Transportation Tech III: A16 ($44,400.00 - $55,130.00/yearly)
  • The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position offered based on the applicant's work experience, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

**Must report to the Snyder Area Office (111 North Kings Hwy Place, Snyder, Texas 79549) for daily work assignments that will require picking up a vehicle to inspect construction projects.

Position Description


General Transportation Tech I:

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

General Transportation Tech II:

Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

General Transportation Tech III:

Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

The essential duties for the General Transportation Tech I include:

  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Maintains construction project records and processes related paperwork.
  • Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional duties for General Transportation Tech II include:

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
  • Reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures, and design guidelines.
  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Works on a survey crew; operates survey instruments such as theodolite, transit and level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional duties for General Transportation Tech III include:

  • Trains other employees.
  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
  • Reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures, and design guidelines.
  • Works on a survey crew; operates survey instruments such as theodolite, transit and level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

No experience or education required.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Commercial Driver’s License

The physical requirements and working conditions for the General Transportation Tech I, II, and III include:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
