Summary
The Associate Gas Systems Planning Engineer will be expected to execute measurable results in gas distribution system analysis, system reliability, long range project planning, and peak demand preparedness to ensure the Company's long-term financial goals are realized. Collaboration is essential with key stakeholders across NiSource Operating Companies including engineering, construction, finance, energy supply services, operations planning, and local operations. Key responsibility is to provide planning, guidance, analysis, and recommendations on NiSource's gas distribution systems development and maintenance using hydraulic system studies, system knowledge, and engineering principles.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Builds, utilizes, and maintains hydraulic models to analyze and plan NiSource’s gas distribution systems to meet design conditions or other various conditions as needed.
  • Projects load growth, performs engineering analysis of NiSource's gas distribution systems based on personal recognition and system knowledge or as requested by various personnel, interprets results, addresses potential critical areas and makes cost effective recommendations to maintain or enhance gas system operation and reliability.
  • Conducts feasibility studies to determine site locations and requirements for existing and potential customers.
  • Investigates, analyzes, prioritizes, develops and inputs a five-year capital budget to address gas distribution system needs and deficiencies. Optimizes capital expenditures.
  • Provides guidance and direction to NiSource gas operations, project engineers, field engineers, and gas systems planning technicians
  • Conducts analysis on NiSource's gas distribution systems to support gas supply planning efforts
  • Provides support to operations and engineering related to system integrity and develops information/suggestions to minimize outages and decrease outage time when they occur.
  • Coordinates semiannual gas system review meetings. Identifies system problems and needs along with justification for inclusion in the budget.
  • Operates, manages, maintains, and enhances computer software and hardware necessary to support accurate gas system analysis.
  • Identifies, recommends and implements process improvements, including integration with new technologies and company systems.
  • Oversees placement of gas pressure charts. Collects and interprets charts to identify problem areas and justify budgeting remedial action.
  • Prepares various special and annual reports or analyses that are necessary for effective operation and/or regulatory compliance.
  • Provides operations support on a 24/7 basis to respond to system emergencies
  • Improve capital allocation decisions for gas distribution growth and maintenance programs
  • Ensures that gas hydraulic system models (e.g. SynerGEE &/or CDC 2015) are accurate/current
  • Develops actionable long-range plans to enhance gas system operation and reliability.
  • Optimizes gas distribution infrastructure
Required Qualifications for Position
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from a 4 year ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology) accredited program.
  • Strong PC skills including Microsoft 365 applications, proficient in Excel
  • Understanding of capital budgeting
  • Understanding of hydraulic theory
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to drive projects/assignments to completion in a complex, deadline driven environment
  • Strong Problem Solving and Critical Thinking Skills
Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position
  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience in managing capital expenditures and establishing investment priorities
  • Experience in working with peer groups across multiple locations
  • 2 years of progressive experience in gas distribution operations and engineering
  • Proficient with using Synergi software.
  • Proficient with using Microsoft Access.
  • Thorough knowledge/understanding of company standards/policies and applicable regulatory codes relative to engineering and operations.
  • Understanding of statistical theory and applications
  • Obtain EIT certification within 2 years of hire date.
  • Obtain P.E. license within 6 years of hire date for state primarily working in
