Job description

I have a crazy awesome job, and I need help. I provide my customers with incredible corn mazes, sunflower and tulip fields. Who can say that? I actually get paid to plant or cut corn mazes. During the summer my family and I travel in a motorhome and go from field to field across the country. Its been a great niche for me and beats the heck out most other jobs. This job is about fun and games. The more fun and games we help our customers to create the more we get paid. You may ask yourself if this is a real job? Yeah, it's a real job with serious pay in a narrow niche market. It is a stable B to B business that continuously grows even when the economy has downturns. We do work hard, and we work long hours at times. We are serious about performance and delivering for our customers. For me, those qualities make the job even better. I have helped my customers develop and build great businesses that support their families well. Being a part, even a small part, of helping someone succeed and realize their dreams is a pretty amazing feeling and a dream come true for me.

So what am I looking for? I am looking someone with a unique set of talents. Perhaps a person that grew up on a farm. This person will need to be an excellent equipment operator with some understanding of agronomy and with mechanical ability. They will need work well with others and be able to build relationships with team members and customers. They need to have the skills to help build our business and our customers’ businesses. I am looking for a person who has their own core values with integrity and drive to create and make the lives of others better. In this job, you get to get your hands dirty and physically work, but this position also requires mental capability, creativity and exertion. I grew up on farm and learned from that world. In ag terms, I am looking for someone who can plan, plant, care for the crop and bring in the harvest. Some one who realizes that it doesn’t matter how much work we do, if we don’t do what it takes to bring in the harvest. To sum it up, I am looking for a good farmer who understands and relates to people.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Entrepreneurial Responsibility:

We are small, niche company, therefore, each of us are responsible to meet goals and objectives in order to be successful. You will need to take responsibility for a project or task and see it though. “If it's going to get done, you're the person who has to make sure it gets done.” You will need to use good business judgement and acumen to understand how your areas of responsibility can serve our customers, translate into profit for the company, and income for yourself. In ag terms, you have to understand how to take the steps necessary to get a good yield and bring in a good harvest. Each of us has the opportunity to provide significant impact to our own income. We only work with those who can demonstrate they want to succeed as much or more than we do. If your with us you won’t have to worry about corporate politics we are loyal. We are not filling a position; we are offering an opportunity. Once established in this role, you will be on your own much of the time to get the job done and keep the schedule.

Building Relationships:

We are a little bit “folksy” here, and our customers are, too. We are good friends with each other and with our customers. We conduct ourselves with high integrity, ethical standards, and strive to provide superior customer service. We need someone who can relate to our customers and build strong, long-term relationships. Our business is built upon our team and customer relationships. You will be working directly with our customers and will be representing our core values to them. In our business our handshake is binding.

Farm Machinery Operation:

We create some really intricate and fun corn mazes, sunflower and tulip fields. You will be operating our equipment to create some of those corn mazes and flower fields. This is not production ag with big tractors, but it does require skill and knowledge to get the job done right. We plant in all kinds of weather conditions and soil types. You will need to know how to adjust and adapt the equipment or schedule for each of these conditions. The crop outcome depends largely on planting it correctly. You will need to coach and help customers how to have their fields prepared correctly and be able to consult on growing their crop.

Consulting:

Entertainment crops such as corn mazes, and flower festivals are high value crops. Many of our customers have limited farming and agronomy knowledge. We are looking to have someone who can help them understand soil management practices, fertility, and pest management. We are not certified crop consultants, but we need to help our customers better understand how to grow their crops and where to go to find the help they need. You will need some farming, agronomy or horticulture background. We also have the opportunity to visit with customers about their business. It would be helpful to have some business management education or experience.

Travel:

We travel in a class 8 truck motorhome that pulls a tag trailer with our equipment, or we use a pickup with a gooseneck trailer with living quarters to get our equipment on location. You have to have experience with and be competent and safe driving a semi sized truck. We are required to be FMCSA compliant, and you will need a class A CDL and a clean driving record to be able to do this job. Our main travel season is May - Aug where each rig can travel roughly 20,000 miles. Your goal will to be able to create 4-8 mazes per week or between 50-80 mazes per season which will require focus and diligence in the busy season. This position requires you be smoke, illicit drug and alcohol free. Once you are trained you will have opportunities to bring family with you as you travel. We will also pay a spouse to team drive with you or possibly pay older teens to help out. Along the route, there are occasional, limited opportunities to make short, fun stops with family. If you’re near the beach, its a good idea to go for a swim. In Branson, MO you should take in a show. My family loved Mt. Rushmore, and we often stop at historical sites like Gettysburg.

Equipment Maintenance:

We expect that our equipment will be well cared for and maintained. You will need to have basic mechanical skills and understanding. You will be examining equipment and facilities to assess safety, maintenance requirements and capital investments opportunities. During the maze season, you will need to be able to diagnose and repair the equipment that we use. You will be largely on your own to see that it gets repaired correctly, in an economical and timely manner. After the maze season you will need to preform equipment maintenance, repairs for the next season. We create or modify some of our equipment, you will be helping to source and fabricate new equipment.

Operational Excellence:

We expect you to drive performance improvement, and create efficiencies to improve operational effectiveness as measured by quality, timeliness, and safety. We learn, invent, and adopt new equipment and systems to serve our customers. You will be expected to develop and apply consistent process and operational improvements. Much of our success has come from figuring out programs or systems on our own.

Sales:

We work with some great customers! You will be consulting and selling products and services to them. Most of our sales are based off long-term relationships and serving our customers well. Our most opportune sales opportunity is when we are speaking with customers on their farms and following up afterward. Sales are accomplished by showing them how our products and services can benefit them. It is mostly about building a relationship of trust with the client. You will be coordinating with customers to plan for their maze, acquiring field measurements and design concepts and scheduling the planting or cutting of their maze. We speak with clients and potential clients on the phone, but we don’t really do any cold calling. Our maze service has sold out for the past few years. Other sales opportunities can be developed by working with our team at winter trade shows and by digitally marketing.

Wow! This is not your traditional job! We realize that we are looking for a person with a pretty unique skill set, “A crazy smart farmer” if you will. If you are a person with farming, mechanical, and business skills who would like to travel the country, this could be your dream job!

  • Bachelor’s degree is required: Ag Business, Agronomy, Ag Systems, Business Management, or a related discipline.
  • 2 years skilled machinery operations with mechanical repair and maintenance abilities.

  • Experience operating class 8 sized truck with trailer (semi) and have or be willing to obtain a CDL.
