Job Description

Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial, and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.

Southwest Virginia Community College, as a comprehensive institution of higher education, dedicates its services to area citizens. This position serves as a working supervisor for maintenance staff members. In addition to working as electrician/plumber/HVAC tech, this position will supervise others doing the same work.

Job duties include:
  • Plan, coordinate, supervise, install, maintain, and repair electrical equipment according to specification and electrical code.

  • Plan, coordinate, supervise, assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems according to specifications and plumbing code.

  • Plan, coordinate, supervise, perform and direct HVAC projects and preventative maintenance of HVAC systems to specification and code.

  • Plan, coordinate, supervise, perform and direct small building maintenance/repair projects, capital outlay projects, construction projects, for electrical, plumbing, HVAC in coordination with Director of Operations.

  • Plans, coordinates, supervises maintenance staff while working alongside them daily as feasible.

  • Performs administrative function as it relates to maintenance/grounds operations for planning, coordination, documentation, reporting, compliance, etc., in coordination with Director of Operations.

  • Other duties as assigned

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

  • Ability to maintain documentation and service records both paper and electronic.

  • Record keeping in accordance with EPA, OSHA, and other governing authorities is critical.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and familiarity of construction, renovation projects, hand and power tools.

  • Operational knowledge of air handlers, chillers, fan coil units and VAV boxes.

  • Ability to repair and maintain small and large equipment.

  • Skills to operate systems relevant to campus safety such as fire alarm panels and controls, fire sprinkler systems, tools and accessories relevant to HVAC, boiler and water treatment, refrigeration and electrical operations.

  • Ability to operate forklift, scissor lift, skid steer, snow plow truck, man lift, backhoe and other heavy equipment.

  • Proficient mechanical skills with knowledge of boilers (electric & oil), air handling units, fire sprinkler systems, fan coil units, exhaust fans, circulation pumps, fire pumps, air compressor, emergency generators, and eye/shower wash stations.

  • Working knowledge of personal computers

  • Ability to apply computer skills pertaining to JCI Metasys system.

  • Ability to use computer maintenance management work order system.

  • Ability to safety and frequently move and handle objects weighing up to and greater than 50 pounds.

  • Demonstrated ability to climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds.

  • Demonstrated ability to work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing and pulling.

  • Significant physical abilities include lifting, carrying, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling and reaching.

  • Significant similar work experience required.

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, work at heights in confined spaces, establish priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to plan, coordinate, manage and supervise in any aspect of the above listed operations.

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of experience required.

  • Ability to perform basic math and knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and skills to perform in HVAC applications
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Valid certification as electrician, HVAC tech, and plumber required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Microsoft Word and Excel experience preferred.
  • CDL preferred.
