Scott Bridge Company, Inc.'s roots date back to 1933 when Mr. I. J. Scott (Jud) and two partners formed Scott Construction Company in Thomasville, Georgia, constructing many highways, airports, bridges, and dams in the Southeast. Mr. Scott left this firm in 1957 and formed his own company, The Scott Company, in Opelika, Alabama, his home. The Scott Company incorporated in 1965 as Scott Bridge Company with I. J. Scott and his son, I. J. Scott, Jr. Also in 1965 Mr. Gerard Swarthout came to the company, became company president, and retired in 1987.

Scott Bridge Company has been a member of the Alabama Road Builders since 1947, and became known as a river bridge contractor, completing many projects on the Warrior, Alabama, Coosa, Tennessee, and Chattahoochee Rivers.

Currently Mr. I. J. Scott's grandsons, I. J. Scott, III (Ike), President, William Scott, Vice President and David Scott, Board Member, own and continue to further the principles and traditions of their father and grandfather before them.

Position Summary

This position is accountable for providing supervision to skilled and semi-skilled craftsman at a project level. This would include monitoring the Safety of their crew members, Quality of the work being preformed, and the overall management of a crew consisting of 4-8 employees. The incumbent would work closely with other Foreman and Superintendents to complete a construction project.

Responsibilities

Works as assigned by the Superintendent to ensure the successful completion of current, on-going construction projects.
Plans and schedules work activities with assigned crew under his supervision.
Executes construction time schedules to make sure project deadlines are met and work is completed on time.
Inspects equipment visually to ensure that it is operating properly.
Complies with all Scott Bridge Company, Inc. Policies and government regulatory guidelines.
Trains new workers in use of equipment and tools.
Analyzes and resolves work problems.
Maintains time records for employees in the work crew.
Promotes a safe, efficient and organized work environment for employees,
Demonstrates safety knowledge concerning lockout/tagout, confined space, emergency action plan, work permits, hot work permits, hole watch, fire watch and First Aid procedures as per customer, job and/or contract requirements.
Works closely with the Project Superintendent, Crane Operators, Pile Drivers, Welders, Helpers, Laborers and other skilled and semi-skilled crafts person to complete current projects in a safe and efficient manner.
Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

Requirements

Incumbents must be well-versed in receiving and handling of equipment used for construction operations. In addition, incumbents must have knowledge of the integration of various crafts to successfully perform their work. Craft knowledge should include pile driving, crane operations, welding, carpentry, concrete, pile driving, and related areas. Incumbents should also possess previous supervisory experience.
PHYISCAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
In addition, General Foreman must also be capable of:
Adapting to extreme temperature changes
Adapting to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposures
Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstances of the incident.
Stand or walk for long periods up to 8 hrs per day.
Capable of lifting 50lbs.
Push /Pulling 50lbs.
