Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Oversees the operation of the cafeteria to ensure compliance with State sanitation codes, provides nutritional school meals that are in compliance with Federal and State Programs and is responsible for a safe, efficient and productive environment. Plan and supervise as well as play a significant role in the preparation, serving, and clean up of meals in the school cafeteria.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1.Works with the chef to prepare all meals served to students and staff at breakfast and lunch and in evenings for public meetings and events
2.Responsible for the efficient and productive operation of the cafeteria to
include scheduling, employee relations and proper delegation of duties and
responsibilities of the cafeteria staff.
2. Supervise, direct and coordinate the work of all permanent, part-time and
temporary help assigned to the cafeteria.
3. Initiate work orders, purchase orders, and budgetary
procedures for services, supplies, materials and equipment required in the
kitchen and cafeteria.
4.Interviews, screens and recommends appointment of all cafeteria personnel.
5.Responsible for overall cleanliness, safety, proper food handling, proper food storage and compliance to State Sanitation Codes.
6.Supervises and instructs kitchen personnel in the safe, proper and efficient use of all kitchen equipment.
7.Coordinates and oversees all stock related to the school lunch program, including the collection of delivery slips and the maintaining of a correct semi-annual inventory.
8.Consults, as needed, with the Business Manager on any subject dealing with the kitchen or cafeteria.
9.Arranges and coordinates substitutes in order to maintain an efficient and effective number of personnel daily.
10.Responsible for providing offerings to students that meet or exceed nutritional guidelines as set forth by the Federal School Lunch Program.
11.Plans, prepares and distributes school lunch menus at least two weeks in advance.

12.Inspects weekly the lunch facility and operations to insure that local, State and Federal standards of diet, health, cleanliness and safety are being maintained.
13.Standardizes types and size of portion served as related to Type “A” lunches.
14.Responsible for financial operation of the cafeteria to include cash receipts, use of Federal Commodities Program, use and monitoring of vendors, inventory control and proper management of food production.
15.Makes application for commodity surplus food for school cafeteria use and directs its distribution.
16.Assists in cafeteria accounting coordination including:
a.The collection and recording of all lunch money daily.
b.Depositing receipts periodically in the bank.
17.Responsible for documentation required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Federal regulations for the proper operation of the cafeteria including
those required by the school administration.
18.Provide occasional meals to special groups.
19.Participates in Farm to School programming, school garden activities, cafeteria taste tests and other food education initiatives in collaboration with teachers and administrators.
20.Perform other work assignments as directed.

  • QUALIFICATIONS:
    General
    1.Demonstrated ability to work in a caring, positive, constructive and cooperative manner with students, staff, administrators, parents, volunteers and all others.

    9.Must be neat and clean in appearance and personal habits.
    10.Must possess a valid driver’s license and a willingness to travel to workshops, meetings or
    other necessary functions.
    11.Must be willing to work overtime.
    12. Must have or be willing to obtain Serve Safe certification.
    13. Demonstrate a familiarity with nutrition technology and Point of Sale (POS) systems.
    14.Must have a passion for producing healthy, appetizing, minimally processed meals.
    15.Must be comfortable seeking out and responding to feedback.

    Specific
    1.Knowledge of Department of Elementary and Secondary Education School Food Service Standards and requirements preferred.
    2.Skill in cooking simple and complex dishes in large quantities and in the use of all kitchen
    equipment.
    3.High School graduate or equivalent.
    4.Five years or more experience in food service operations, preferably in a school environment.
    5.Experiences in a supervisory capacity in food service operations.
    6.Be willing to be trained in anti-choking procedures annually.
    7.Considerable knowledge of materials, procedures and methods used in handling, preparing
    and cooking food in large quantities.
    8.Considerable knowledge of the approved sanitary methods and procedures for the care and
    use of kitchens and kitchen equipment and for the handling and cooking of food.
    9.Considerable knowledge of nutritive food values.
    10.Considerable knowledge of weights and measures and their food equivalents.
    11.Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with subordinates.
    12.Willingness to work nights or weekend days when needed for special events or programs.
    13. Willingness to work with food service staff to train workers to enhance their knowledge of nutritional guidelines, food handling/sanitation procedures and food preparation.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience preferred
