OVERVIEW OF ROLE:

The Food Safety Manager will develop and implement food safety strategies, programs, policies, and procedures to ensure the highest levels of food safety. The Food Safety Manager will also develop the strategic vision of food safety, manage the food safety function and staff, makes decisions on workforce planning, and ensures products are manufactured within USDA FSIS's food safety regulations.

This role is for the 2nd Shift and the hours are 9:00pm-6:00am - relocation provided.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages food safety by working with other members of the management team to ensure compliance in the following functions:

§ Developing, monitoring and revising HACCP system (HACCP Plans and corresponding pre-requisite programs)

§ Monitoring, resolving and tracking foreign matter/ metal contaminants

§ Developing a new system for reducing risk of foreign material contamination or microbiological hazards

  • Ensures highly disciplined compliance with all regulatory and Company defined food safety and sanitation standards, systems, procedures, and practices to guarantee absolute wholesomeness of HMF's products.
  • Performs sensory evaluation of products which is a critical component of the function (taste, smell, texture, and visual evaluation).
  • Trains Quality Assurance & Food safety personnel in monitoring for product safety and quality.
  • Develops policies, procedures and training programs related to food safety - such as allergen program, SSOPs, metal detection.
  • Stays abreast of evolving updates to food safety standards and regulations.
  • Works cross-functionally with R&D, Marketing, Sales, Maintenance, and Operations teams on food safety and compliance of new and existing products.
  • Interfaces with Sanitation team to ensure program compliance.
  • Interacts with USDA and FDA Regulators as needed.
  • Provides technical support to Operations to continually improve line efficiencies without compromising food safety.
  • Be a HACCP Coordinator and lead the HACCP and Food Defense meetings.
  • Be an SQF Practitioner back-up for the Quality Assurance Manager.
  • Ensures plant and product conformance to third party audit standards such as GFSI's SQF - including employee awareness and audit preparedness training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Director of QA& Food Safety or Management.
  • Demonstrates and reinforces HPT behaviors in the department and organization.
  • In their absence, Director of Quality Assurance & Food Safety, or the QA Manager will perform his/her responsibilities or delegate to a designate.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's Degree in food science, Biology, Chemistry or other related field required
  • 5-8 years of food industry managerial experience (meat industry highly preferred)
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) required
  • Working knowledge of USDA and FDA regulations required
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Portuguese a plus
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products required

  • Must be comfortable walking for extended periods of time and climbing stairs.
  • Able to sit / stand for prolonged periods at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced work environment where a broad range of tasks may be required
  • Must be able to learn new tasks, remember processes, maintain focus, complete tasks independently, and tasks in situations that have a speed or productivity quota.
  • Must have good vision and manual dexterity.
