U-ExCEL (UNE – Exercise and Conditioning for Easier Living) has been in operation since 1995 and is an income generating program. In 2005, U-ExCEL became an auxiliary service of the Division of Geriatrics within the College of Osteopathic Medicine. U-ExCEL’s mission is to advance health and well-being and optimize aging for older adults. The mission is achieved through the provision of programming, presentations, workshops, etc. to older adults, their care partners, staff and/or organizations to promote healthier living and maintain or improve older adult quality of life and function. The basic function of this position is to uphold U-ExCEL’s contracts at various facilities. This may be done by teaching U-ExCEL exercise classes (water and land-based), leading educational presentations/discussions, working one-on-one with residents at facilities, and designing personal training routines when appropriate.

Responsibilities
  • Provide fitness, health, and wellness training to older adults regardless of the environment in which they live.
  • Responsible for ensuring that registration, program implementation, and class schedules follow the professional protocols of the U-ExCEL program.
  • Under the leadership of the Fitness Director design and implement health promotion programs and fitness educational programs including newsletters, bulletin boards, and lectures when appropriate.
  • Under the leadership of the Fitness Director assist with marketing, scheduling, class content, and supervising student interns.
  • Maintain records and data for classes including attendance, emergencies, etc.
  • Perform U-ExCEL protocols and pre-screenings for new members/clients.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and workshops as required
  • Apply ACSM guidelines for participant safety and to maintain industry standards
  • Keep abreast of current developments in the fitness/wellness field.
  • Keep abreast of required training and certifications, including OSHA blood borne pathogen training.
  • Provide assistance in emergency situations when deemed necessary or notify emergency personnel, which may require completing incident/accident forms and ensuring the appropriate personnel are informed.
  • Opportunities to participate in grants related to older adult fitness and learn about research will be provided.
  • Opportunities to work with student fitness interns during the fall and/or spring semesters is usual.
  • Understand and comply with contracted sites safety manual and personnel manual.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA’s Blood born Pathogen Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) and Chapter 8 of the University of New England Safety Manual.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA requirements (29 CFR Part 1910) for Personal and HIPPA Regulations.
  • Follow Protective Equipment (PPE) utilization as defined by the University Chemical Hygiene Officers, the Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator (EHSC), the supervisor and Chapter 17 of the University of New England Safety Manual.
  • Understand and comply with the University of New England Safety Manual and personnel manual.
  • Perform related duties as necessary.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, or a related discipline, plus CPR and First Aid Certification. Experience working with older adults in fitness or exercise promotion, or a combination of education and experiences from comparable knowledge/skills areas are required. Certifications such as Aquatics Exercise Association, ACSM Health Fitness Specialist, and/or National Strength and Conditioning Association CSCS, etc. are highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of human physiology, anatomy and/or exercise/fitness protocols.
  • Knowledge of American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for Exercise testing and Prescription.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Good teaching skills.
  • Ability to deal effectively with people of all ages (especially older adults), as well as the staff at contracted sites.
