Position Summary


In compliance with established policies and procedures, conducts financial education and outreach to MSUFCU and OU Credit Union members, and members of these communities. Creates and presents financial education materials for a variety of member groups: youth, college, young adults, adults, etc. Coordinates many educational and outreach functions to promote the credit union to the membership and new members.


Work Location

This position is a hybrid role with a combination of working both onsite at our Headquarters Building in East Lansing, community events, and remotely. A schedule of expected onsite and remote work days will be discussed during the interview process.

This position requires the ability to travel within Greater Lansing and Oakland County and work varied evening and weekend hours conducting education sessions and staffing events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Financial Educator I:

  • Responsible for understanding the products and services offered by the Credit Union
  • Staffs events on campus, in the community, and in schools (elementary – high school) representing the credit union to promote MSUFCU products and services
  • Proofreads own documents to verify their effectiveness in conveying the necessary message, correct as to content, grammar, spelling and typographical errors
  • Responsible for teaching financial courses using instructional methods geared toward all ages, learning in a classroom setting. Plan lessons and curriculum based on the learning needs of culturally diverse and multiskilled community members, which enhance their financial understanding
  • Implement a variety of instructional delivery methods, that include groups or individualized instruction
  • Assist members, employees, and community partners by answering product and service questions relating to shares and account services
  • Perform account related research for employees and members with the appropriate sense of urgency
  • Develop, plan, and conduct focus groups to broaden understanding of financial education programs and services
  • Network with local organizations and university contacts to maintain existing and form new relationships
  • Work closely with the:
    • Marketing Department to create content for Youth Members and promote financial education on Credit Union channels
    • Business Development Department to host lunch and learns/presentations for Select Employee Groups
    • Community Development Department to develop the Credit Union and Desk Drawer Fund's relationships with community partners across the state
    • Internal Communications Department to communicate Financial Education programs and events to employees
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward credit union initiatives and mission statement
  • Maintain a high level of integrity; treat members and coworkers with courtesy and respect
  • Foster teamwork and a supportive work environment
  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships in and outside of department
  • Research, design, develop, and evaluate instructional materials
  • Plan and coordinate education opportunities
  • Analyze education needs to develop new training programs or modify and improve existing programs
  • Create, maintain, and edit instructional materials
  • Present training programs using a variety of instructional techniques or formats, such as role playing, simulations, team exercises, group discussions, videos, or lectures.
  • Evaluate and adjust training content and delivery
  • Seek professional development opportunities
  • Manage several training projects and sessions concurrently
  • Prepares and presents all supporting materials relating to member education sessions
  • Assists with the research, writing, and updating of new content on MSUFCU and OU Credit Union web sites and apps relating to financial education topics
  • Maintain results for each seminar or financial session presented
  • Coordinate MSUFCU and OU Credit Union member seminar programs including designing educational materials for online seminars, contacting and arranging speakers, promoting seminars, and representing MSUFCU/OU Credit Union at the seminars
  • Coordinate member education events by handling the event details, staffing, preparing the proper materials, promotional items, etc.
  • Create online educational curriculums for members and the community
  • Participate in training activities within the department and with the learning and talent development department; such training helps to ensure staff compliance with Credit Union policies and state and federal regulations and laws
  • Perform other duties and assist other employees, as assigned

Financial Educator II:

  • All of Financial Educator I duties and responsibilities
  • Present to staff and members regarding credit union products and services
  • Write, design, and edit podcasts, blogs, and other social network programs as it relates to member financial education
  • Work with management to create and implement special projects and programs to ensure success of the project and grow the Credit Union and ensure DEI practices
  • Proof read documents from Financial Educators to verify accuracy and effectiveness in conveying the necessary message; correct as to content, grammar, spelling and typographical errors.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision
  • Creates new programs within the community
  • Support Campus 2 Career internship program

Senior Financial Educator:

  • All of Financial Educator I and II duties and responsibilities
  • Trains staff in level I or II positions
  • Leads team of education specialists
  • Independently manage programs and education curriculum

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required


Financial Educator I:

  • Must have excellent communication skills both written and oral along with the ability to present information effectively to staff and members
  • Bachelor’s Degree or experience equivalent required; preferred degree in marketing, communications, journalism, education, graphic design, business, or related
  • Ability to solve problems and handle complex details
  • Multi-task orientation to handle a number of projects at once
  • Must be a team player as there are various departments and personalities to satisfy
  • Work requires understanding of graphic design
  • Ability to meet deadlines so updates and content are completed in timely manner
  • Knowledge of the Credit Union’s savings, checking, ATM, VISA, IRA, Loans and other services, including rules and regulations, policies and procedures
  • Requires the analytical ability to create reports related to analyzing successful outreach promotions
  • Must be proficient in the following computer programs: Symitar, PowerPoint, Keynote, and Microsoft Office
  • Must be proficient tin video conference platforms: Zoom, Google Teams, Microsoft Teams, WebEx Teams/Events, Ring Central

Financial Educator II:

  • All of Financial Educator I knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Proficient in software programs and ability to create videos

Senior Financial Educator:

  • All of Financial Educator I and II knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Expert in the software programs
  • CCUFC or CFEI certification

Physical Demands and Work Environment


  • May be required to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to operate standard office technology, equipment and tools, which may include many hours of computer and phone usage.
  • Occasionally needs to move about inside of office area
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous condition, i.e. robbery. Receives detailed instructions and procedures to be followed to minimize the exposure
  • This position is able to work in hybrid or onsite working arrangements.
