Distinguishing Features of Work

The Wichita Public Library has an immediate opening for an innovative, dynamic, and enthusiastic person to join our team as an adult fiction selector. This position will be part of the Collection Development team at the Advanced Learning Library in Wichita’s Delano neighborhood.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to working with the public and providing an in depth and well-rounded print and digital fiction collection to meet the diverse needs of our community. This position will assist and oversee maintenance of all fiction collections system-wide. Candidates must have strong reader’s advisory skills and be prepared to provide both education on best practices to staff and direct reader’s advisory service to customers. Candidates should have outstanding communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, strong research capabilities, experience managing budgets, and competency with technologies including personal computer applications and devices. This position provides direct reference service to customers one evening a week and on rotating weekends.

The nature and amount of supervision varies with the difficulty of work assignments, but the assignments are carried out with considerable independence following established procedures. Work is directed and reviewed through the establishment of goals and subsequent evaluation of progress toward goal attainment.

This is an exempt position. Below is a typical work schedule. The successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility should schedule changes be needed to meet the demands of the workgroup.

Typical work week:
MON 11:15-8:15 PM
TU - FRI 9:00-6:00 PM
Saturday rotation (third weekend) 9:15-6:15 PM (day off the following week)
Sunday rotation (once per month) 12:45-5:15 PM (half day off the following week)

Examples of Work Performed

  • Selects a wide array of fiction materials to meet diverse community needs, in both print and e-material format.
  • Efficiently manages an annual budget from multiple funding sources.
  • Assists with evaluation and maintenance of fiction collections at all library locations.
  • Provides excellent reader’s advisory assistance to customers, both in-person and digitally.
  • Assists customers in person, online, and by telephone with information needs. Must be proficient in utilizing the library catalog, online subscription databases, and the Internet. Supports public computing users with their use of library electronic resources, the Internet, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Participates on library planning teams and serves on special projects as assigned.
  • Stays abreast of best practices in libraries and publishing trends through training and development activities, reading professional literature, and participating in professional activities..
  • Dependent upon assignment, position may be required to travel to different work sites throughout the workday. Those positions will require reliable personal transportation.

Requirements of Work

  • Thorough knowledge of library methods, principles, and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of reference materials and tools of research.
  • Considerable knowledge of reader interest and of books and authors.
  • Knowledge of standard computer keyboard configurations and ability to access, interpret, and record information using a video display terminal and electronic keyboard.
  • Ability to establish and maintain courteous and tactful relationships with associates and library patrons.
  • Ability to: push a loaded book cart, weighing up to 250 pounds; reach, bend, stoop, or squat and arrange books on library shelves; use manually operated office tools and supplies such as scissors, staplers, glue, and/or typewriter; hold, inspect, turn single pages, and read books weighing up to fifteen pounds with pages made from papers of a wide range of quality and thickness.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally, in writing, and/or by whatever creative means are necessary to cross communication barriers.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Required Experience and Training

MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution (equivalent education and experience may be considered); outstanding communication (written and oral) and public presentation skills; a strong customer service commitment; knowledge of literature and informational trends; and an advanced level of proficiency with technology, including mobile and personal computing, integrated library systems, and media production. Spanish language or ASL skills are preferred.

Evening and weekend shifts in rotation with other public service staff are required. Candidates need to be able to travel to different worksites throughout the workday when job assignment requires, therefore will need reliable transportation. Residency within thirty minutes lawful driving time of the corporate limits of the City of Wichita will be required of the successful applicant. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a preemployment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

The current salary range for this position is $45,360 - $80,653 plus an excellent benefits package. The starting salary will be $45,360 - $63,007 based on qualifications..

CITY OF WICHITA

FULL-TIME EMPLOYEE BENEFITS
1. VACATION - Most employees with less than five years' employment earn 10 days of vacation per year. After five years, accrual rates increase at varying rates to varying maximums, depending on work schedule and/or union representation. Maximum accumulation is 30 work days.

2. HOLIDAYS - There are eleven paid holidays. One is a Personal Holiday granted after the first six months to be taken at the employee's option as scheduled with the supervisor.

3. SICK LEAVE - Sick leave accrual begins at one-half day per month. After five years, it is one work day per month (no maximum). Employees who use 24 hours (3 days) or less of sick leave in a calendar year earn a "Well Day." An additional "Well Day" can be earned following a year of perfect attendance.

4. HEALTH INSURANCE - Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kandas provides two levels of medical and prescription plans. Both medical plan are PPOs that does not require selecting a physician or referrals for specialty care. Both medical plans include Vision benefits through Vision Service Plan. Pre-tax premium deduction is offered. The City contributes 80% of the premium, towards medical, Rx and vision premiums.

5. DENTAL INSURANCE - Two employee-paid Delta Dental plans are offered – Preferred and Traditional. DeltaPreferred requires using a dentist from a smaller network for a lower premium. Traditional allows use of any dentist, although benefits are higher using a dentist from the large Delta panel. Benefits under both plans are the same. Pre-tax premium deduction is offered.

6.LIFE INSURANCE – Low-cost term life insurance is available. Employees pay one-third of the cost. The amount of Basic Life coverage is twice annual pay (Members of SEIU and Teamsters: maximum of $150,000; all non-represented employees: maximum of $400,000). Dependent coverage is available ($4,000) for an additional $0.14 per pay period. Accidental death and dismemberment coverage is included. The plan is through The Standard.

7.SUPPLEMENTAL LIFE – Additional employee-paid term life insurance is available from The Standard at low group rates. Participation in Basic Life is required. This plan is portable.

8. LONG-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE – This employee-paid group disability plan from Lincoln Financial replaces a selected amount of pre-disability income for work- or non-work-related disabilities. Premiums are determined by income and age.

9.VOLUNTARY ACCIDENTAL DEATH & DISMEMBERMENT - This employee-paid plan from The Standard offers coverage for accidental death and dismemberment in addition to that included in Basic Life.

10.RETIREMENT - The City offers two retirement plans - Wichita Employees (WER) Plan 3, and Commissioned Police & Fire Plan C-79. The WER plan is a defined contribution plan; Police & Fire is a defined benefit plan. Both are contributory - employees and the City share the cost.

11.FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS – Employees may elect to make pre-tax deductions for dependent care and unreimbursed medical expenses, reducing the cost of these expenses by eliminating taxes on the amount deducted.

12. LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE – This plan from UNUM offers facility and home care benefits for employees, spouses and some other family members. Several options for benefit amount and duration, and specific plan features, are available.
