Overview:

Beaumont School is seeking a part-time Fashion Design Teacher to join our Fine and Applied Arts Department for the 2023-2024 academic year. The successful candidate will focus on the major aspects of the fashion industry and will provide students with a foundational understanding of basic elements of fashion design sketches, and the development of their own design, analysis, and drawing. Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate a willingness to lend costume support for theatre productions when needed. The candidate will be a dynamic and collaborative educator with experience teaching at the high school level.

Beaumont School, founded in 1850, is the oldest school in the Cleveland Diocese and the oldest all-girls secondary school in greater Cleveland. Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Valid Ohio Teaching Certificate or eligible to obtain an Ohio Teaching Certificate
  • FBI/BCI background check
  • VIRTUS certification
  • Proven teaching or instructional experience (preferred)
  • Experience teaching International Baccalaureate courses (preferred)
  • Mastery of fine tailoring, pattern drafting, and fiber knowledge skills

Position Responsibilities:

  • Teaches part-time
  • Follows course objectives of the Beaumont School curriculum
  • Helps students develop basic skills in hand and machine sewing techniques, in the selection, use, and care of basic sewing equipment and to study commercial patterns and simple clothing construction
  • Provides students experiences in other simple forms of clothing construction as well as instruction in new skills for shaping and fitting garments
  • Applies basic and advanced construction methods and techniques, including linings and teaches accuracy
  • Teaches the flat-pattern method of tailoring and garment pattern design. Students will illustrate fashion mannequins, patterns pieces and garment and fabric illustrations. Students will broaden their understanding of designers, fabrics, and fibers
  • Prepares students to pursue higher education opportunities in fashion degree programs.
  • Understands various aspects of the fashion design, manufacturing, merchandising, and retail industry and the industry’s role in local, state, national, and global economies
  • Applies the elements and principles of design in various aspects of the fashion industry
  • Understands how the history of social, cultural, political, economic, and technological changes influence fashion
  • Understands the characteristics, production, and maintenance of textiles and the use of sustainable practices
  • Understands the principles and techniques used in fashion design and product development and manufacturing
  • Provides for safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment, and tools
  • Works with other departments to provide interdisciplinary support and to develop cross-curricular units
  • Utilizes technology and other educational tools to support student learning
  • Communicates with counselors, administration, and tutors to maintain a positive learning experience and identify any problems or difficulties among students
  • Communicates with parents and students by maintaining grade book, LMS Page, and through email/phone calls
  • Pursues and participates in professional development on a regular basis
  • Maintains flexible hours within contract specifications, providing time before or after school for additional help, individualized instruction, and mentoring
  • Participates in required afterschool and weekend events like open houses, curriculum nights, and parent-teacher conferences
  • Other duties as assigned

Employee may also be required to periodically lift and carry moderately heavy materials weighing up to approximately 25 pounds. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. General office environment. Work is primarily, but not exclusively, in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential or work hazards; however, there are sometimes stressful conditions. Working conditions will require working in front of a computer for several hours. Occasionally working outside, standard working days or hours are required. Frequent in-person meetings for individuals or groups, virtual, and phone calls. Travel to prospect schools and external events. Variations in noise level will occur.
