Applications are invited for the position of Farm Practicum Coordinator at Oberlin College through a grant from The Mellon Foundation. This is an open-field search for a full-time, 1-year Administrative and Professional Staff position with the potential for renewal for up to 2.5 additional years through the grant. The appointment has the potential to transition to a continuing position after the grant.

The Coordinator will join an initiative supporting the development of a food studies concentration at Oberlin College and collaboration on food justice with Lorain County Community College and local food and environmental justice organizations. Through commitments to understanding and supporting Black agrarianism, Indigenous food sovereignty, immigrant workers, incarcerated citizens, and environmental and food justice, Oberlin’s food studies curriculum centers analysis of ethics, justice, reparations, and decolonization, and practices of storytelling, community organizing, hospitality, and social care. The Coordinator will be based in Oberlin’s interdisciplinary Environmental Studies Program and will work closely with a team of faculty from Oberlin and Lorain County Community College as well as community organizations and undergraduate research assistants.

Responsibilities
The Coordinator will create and teach a course in sustainable urban growing techniques in fall and spring; develop and coordinate a summer intern training program; develop and manage Winter (January) Term and summer internship placements in the areas of food justice and farming; and organize and facilitate collaborations with local organizations. Responsibilities will include both education and practical training for college students, as well as supervision of student assistants. The growing operation is an approximately 2,000 square foot space of diversified vegetable production for donation to a local social-services organization for its food programs.

Essential Job Functions
  • Develop and teach farm and community services practicum courses in fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters
  • Develop and manage Winter (January) Term and summer internship placements for students
  • Organize and facilitate community partner collaborations

Marginal Job Functions
  • Supervise student assistants

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field, or bachelor’s degree with 2-4 years of relevant professional experience
  • Demonstrated ability in grow food
  • Experience in managing farm work crews
  • A commitment to working effectively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners from diverse backgrounds
  • Commitment to working with food justice organizations and community-service agencies

Compensation
Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
