Buy Sod USA, a multi-state agribusiness company with sod farms in the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia is currently seeking to hire a motivated Full Time Farm Mechanic responsible for the operation of a comprehensive preventative maintenance and repair program.

This program includes the repair of failing equipment, keeping records of parts and labor needed to maintain each piece of equipment, and placing orders for parts and supplies needed for equipment or service. The Mechanic properly communicates any needs or problems relating to the maintenance or repair of equipment to the Equipment Manager. The Mechanic places safety as a top priority and is responsible for maintaining a clean service area.

Farm Mechanic Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a neat and organized shop area.
  • Assist management with purchases of repair parts and replacement supplies.
  • Addresses all safety concerns in a timely manner.
  • Meet all company and equipment related safety requirements.
  • Report safety issues and concerns to management in a timely manner.
  • Have the courage to speak up and stop unsafe acts.
  • Ability to prioritize equipment repair and maintenance work.
  • Keeps a complete set of records for equipment repairs, equipment conditions and preventative maintenance for all equipment.
  • Ensure that all farm equipment inspections are completed thoroughly and consistently
  • Maintains a preventative maintenance program within budget on all equipment to avoid unnecessary downtime.
  • Inspects, diagnoses and repairs equipment up to and including mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components.
  • Consistently communicate equipment issues and understand job assignments.
  • Work in conjunction with the production/harvest teams to ensure that equipment is in good working order.
  • Depending on workloads, weather/field conditions, staffing, etc. must be able to assist in different departments as instructed by Farm Management.

Farm Mechanic:

  • Certification from trade or technical school in maintenance repair preferred.
  • 3+ years’ experience as equipment mechanic preferred.
  • Working knowledge of light and heavy farm and delivery equipment preferred.
  • Working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatuses.
  • Skilled in the use of a variety of equipment repair tools.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to be a team player and build positive working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and keep records.
  • Ability to help diagnose mechanical issues and determine appropriate maintenance work.
  • Ability to understand the concept and consequences of grass cross-contamination.
  • Must have the ability to discern what issues need to be brought to upper management.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to include, but not limited to, early AM/PM, nights and weekends and hours that could fluctuate day-to-day.
  • Ability to be on call as needed. Responds to calls in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions required.
  • Ability to sit, climb and balance as well as bend and kneel frequently.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds or more occasionally. Twisting with weight as needed.
  • Manual dexterity, coordination and constant movement and use of limbs required.

Position Located: Tarboro, NC.

Pay: From $23.76 per hour

  • Heavy equipment maintenance/Mechanic: 3 years (Preferred)
