General Summary

This position will advise international students regarding student visa regulations (training provided) and process immigration-related requests.

Duties include but are not limited to:


  • Serve as Designated School Official (DSO), advise international students regarding visa status maintenance and update the SEVIS database system in accordance with immigration regulations
  • Process student requests and updates to SEVIS via the Terra Dotta software system
  • Hold regular “Express Advising” hours for students to connect in person or virtually
  • Assist with answering the ISSS main phone line and monitoring the ISSS main email
  • Assist with monitoring of the unit’s Communication Calendar and sending out timely email reminders to international students
  • Assist with outreach and programming as needed
  • Meet regularly with the ISSS Director to provide updates and critical insights
  • Other duties as assigned

This is a part-time, temporary position.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Ability to meet Designated School Official (DSO) requirements, as federally regulated by the Department of Homeland Security.   • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Quick learner with strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to navigate multiple projects simultaneously with frequent interruptions

Special Instructions for Applicants

Extra Help employees may only work up to 28 hours per week for all University employment. Employees are only paid for hours worked and do not qualify for most benefits including health insurance and retirement, with Illinois State University. However, Extra Help employees are eligible to participate in the University’s supplemental retirement savings plans (403b). Applicable retirement information is provided at the time of hire. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment. In addition, extra help employees may only work up to 900 hours total during their employment.
