We are seeking a qualified Executive Chef- Culinary Training Instructor with a strong commitment to career development in the culinary arts. The Executive Chef will facilitate a 12 week culinary instruction program with ServSafeĀ® Food Safety certification instruction and will manage the kosher catering social enterprise with the support of a Culinary Instructor. The Culinary Director will prepare the food requirements of the daily menu with concern for quality, appeal, presentation, cleanliness, safety, and cost in accordance with kosher law.

Responsibilities:
  • Direct and oversee the training programs and meal production of our 2 training kitchens (T Building and Silver Hub) and catering social enterprise in Elmhurst and Jamaica, Queens.
  • Manage the culinary training program and catering social enterprise in support of overall program goals and objectives.
  • Development of workforce culinary curriculum and workforce practical training coordination
  • Collaborate with the Director of Training for recruitment of participants for the training program
  • Collaborate with workforce staff and employment coordinators to ensure participant retention and job placement.
  • General oversight of production of daily internal (and eventually external) meals
  • Supervision of sous chefs and culinary trainees.
  • Instruct adults with barriers to employment the basics of food and kitchen safety, food preparation, and making healthy choices and substitutions when cooking, according to the highlighted objectives of each lesson.
  • Utilize a variety of instruction techniques to prepare students for above-entry level positions in the culinary field.
  • Development of kosher catering menu and program menus for the culinary training and the social enterprise that will serve CommonPoint Queens programs. Choose recipes that demonstrate key nutrition, food budgeting, and food preparation lessons each week.
  • Assuring the maintenance of the kitchen in a clean, safe, and orderly fashion, while adhering to the policies and procedures of the NYS Department of Health, and supervising mashgiach.
  • Facilitate class discussions on each cooking or food safety message, allowing participants to brainstorm how they might put new behaviors into action, discuss barriers to adopting new behaviors, and share ideas with their peers for overcoming barriers.
  • Work totaling 35hrs per week between the hours of 8am - 6pm with exception to special events and catering as early as 5:30am and as late as 9pm.
  • Continued maintenance of all food certifications and accreditations , to include but not limited to, NYC Food Handlers Licencing and ServSafe Food Protection Managers Certification.
  • In conjunction with Operations Director, managing program budget and expenditures to ensure that available funds and resources are used efficiently.
  • Coordinating with Operations Director for general oversite of labor and food production budget. Assuring monthly and annual numbers are met and we are remaining within budgetary projections
  • Invoicing internal and external clients and assuring appropriate costs associated with menu offerings.
  • Collaborate with Operations Director and provide oversite of all food and vendor orders and donations.
  • Partnering with Sr management team to lead the planning, development and implementation of strategic plan for the culinary training program and catering social enterprise. Monitor performance goals against plan, and set, identify and prioritize areas for improvement.

Qualifications:
  • 8 plus years experience in large-scale food preparation and delivery, kitchen management and/or food services.
  • 3 plus years experience managing food service workers including cooks, chefs, dishwashers and dieticians/nutritionists.
  • Current valid food safety certifications such as ServSafe.
  • Advanced Degree or Bachelorā€™s Degree in food services, business management or related field preferred.
  • Youth development experience preferred.
  • Interest and comfort in working with low-income individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Knowledge of kosher laws required.

Start Date: Anticipated Opening
Salary: 80-85K full benefits
Schedule: 8- 4 or 9-5 with some evenings
