POSITION: Environmental Health & Safety Specialist

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Chief Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring effective implementation and maintenance of safety and industrial health programs at facility. Ensures standards are applied consistently to promote compliance and a work environment that adheres to regulations and Gables’ environmental, safety and health policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety OR
  • Minimum 2 years EHS experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Current OSHA 30 hour OSHA certification.
  • Current Hazardous Waste Handler Certification (or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire).
  • Familiarity with NFPA standards preferred.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitors and measures environmental health and safety performance and communicates to Chief Engineer.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains all environmental health and safety policies, procedures, work instructions, visual aids, inspection programs and reporting for EHS function.
  • Creates, maintains, and provides all safety training, either classroom or web based, to foster an environment with a high level of compliance to facility EHS policies and procedures.
  • Systematically tours/audits work areas to detect and correct unsafe conditions and behaviors with the support of responsible shop/department supervisors.
  • Reports and reviews findings from accident investigations, facilities inspections or environmental testing.
  • Contributes to continuous improvement and uses Plan-Do-Check-Act process in all job functions.
  • Supports facility inspections and handle all health and safety regulatory reporting if required.
  • Implements and maintains all industrial hygiene monitoring programs to include hearing, vision, and respiratory protection.
  • Supports site emergency response by conducting exercises/drills.
  • Develops Job Hazard Analysis (JHA’s) as needed.

JOB SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • In depth knowledge of EHS/OSHA regulations and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to respond to problems and issues in a tactful and time sensitive manner.
  • Strong coordination skills and ability to work with supervisors to ensure communication is being regularly communicated to workforce.
  • Ability to translate, statistically analyze data and effectively report problems through written or graphical formats
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality on all issues related to position
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office applications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Medium Work- This role requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Most essential functions are performed while standing.
  • Must be able to perform physical labor including: climbing ladders, bending, stooping, twisting and other motions required in the performance of normal maintenance duties.
  • Visual acuity is required to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • This role is subject to both outside and inside environmental conditions.
